Staging Sustainability Conference at York University

How can we produce art that reflects, celebrates, critiques and advances the cultural life of our community without contributing to the destruction of the setting that inspires these artistic endeavours?

STAGING SUSTAINABILITY   Arts | Community | Culture | Environment

An international conference in the Faculty of Fine Arts, York University

April 20 – 22, 2011    |    Toronto, Canada

Staging Sustainability is an opportunity for interdisciplinary dialogue about the issues and challenges associated with sustainable arts practice and performance.  The conference considers how the arts engage questions of sustainability from a dual vantage point: cultural and ecological.

Artists and those who support the arts in a myriad of ways – from scholars, critics, producers and designers to policy-makers, industry and government – come together for talks, hands-on workshops, panel discussions, screenings and staged readings.

Keynote presenters are:

  • David Buckland, founding director of Cape Farewell, London/UK
  • Gil Favreau, director of Social Action and Responsibility, Global Citizenship at Cirque du Soleil
  • Ian Garrett, executive director of The Center for Sustainable Practice in the Arts, Los Angeles
  • Theresa May, Department of Theatre Arts, University of Oregon; artistic director of Earth Matters on Stage/Ecodrama Playwrights Festival
  • Catriona Mortimer-Sandilands, Canada Research Chair in Sustainability and Culture in the Faculty of Environmental Studies, York University and ecosexuality scholar Michael J. Morris, Ohio State University
  • Performance artist Colette Urban and filmmaker Katherine Knight

The conference is open to the public. For program details and registration info, visitwww.stagingsustainability.com

Staging Sustainability is produced and presented by the Faculty of Fine Arts, York University with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
