When Peter Fleming stepped down as Director of PMArts, we began discussions about finding his replacement. Our Director of TDArts, Paul Fujimoto-Pihl, expressed interest in the position, and the board was happy to accept. As a result, we need a new Director of TDArts, and are undertaking a national call for interest.
TDArts (Technical Direction for the Arts) is situated under the umbrella organization of SMArts Stage Managing the Arts. The model of SMArts involves a core leadership team of volunteers that head up SMArts, PMArts, TDArts. This position is ideal for a person who is committed to professional development and the betterment of the industry.
This volunteer position, which includes an honorarium, will work in collaboration with the Director of PMArts and the Executive Director of SMArts to plan and implement an annual conference and at least one other satellite event. The Director will work closely with the administrative team to offer high quality programming that is relevant and timely for the community.
Primary responsibilities:
- Develop the conference program and curriculum in consultation with the Executive Director.
- Research, invite, and guide instructors to lead sessions.
- Represent TDArts and maintain relationships with Technical Directors, Production Managers, in the performing arts community.
- Approach and meet with potential sponsors and funding bodies.
- Work within budget as approved by the Board.
- Promote and ensure ample conference registration to meet revenue targets.
- Write promotional copy as required.
- Attend post-mortem and instituting changes based on feedback from participants, Executive Director, and Board of Directors.
- Organize discussion series sessions throughout the year.
This volunteer position requires approximately 200 hours a year. The time commitment is most intense in the lead up to and during the annual conference in the spring. There is an honorarium plus travel expenses.
Expertise / Interest we are seeking:
- Strong network within the Canadian Performing Arts Industry
- 10 years of professional experience as a Technical Director or related experience
- Experience in training / professional development / mentorship is considered an asset
