The Colin Campbell Award for Excellence in Technical Theatre will be awarded annually to an individual at any stage of their career who has displayed excellence and commitment to the field of professional technical theatre in Greater Vancouver through their body of work. Award Recipients will be honored annually at the Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards with a $500 Cash Prize and a certificate.

Eligibility:

People currently eligible for this award create and interpret the setting and work in professional theatre in the following positions:

• Production Manager
• Stage Manager or Assistant Stage Manager
• Props Builders, Props Buyers, Props
• Set Builder
• Scenic Carpenter
• Scenic Painter
• Stage Crew
• Wig Maker
• Cutter
• Sewer
• Technicians
• Technical Director
• Wardrobe Staff
• Dressers
• Milliners

And other similar positions not listed above.

Submission Guidelines:

Individuals may be nominated by someone else or may nominate themselves. Submissions will be collected by the Colin Campbell Award Committee.

Applications Must Contain:

1. Name of Person Making Submission
2. Name of Nominee
3. Phone number, email address and website if applicable.
4. A short bio of Nominee (150 words).
5. An overview of the Nominee’s experience in technical theatre in Greater Vancouver (1 page).
6. Why this Nominee is an excellent candidate for this award (50 words).

ABOUT COLIN CAMPBELL

Colin lived and worked in technical theatre and live performance for over 30 years in a variety of capacities and increasing responsibility, until his retirement for health reasons shortly before his death.  He began his career with Western Canada Theatre while still in high school in Kamloops remained constant in his commitment to the live performance industry thereafter.  

His career in Vancouver spanned Expo ’86 to the 2010 Olympics, and he stick-handled performance events within these major international events, saw the industry change and develop, and embraced new technologies, finding ways to “save time, save money” while always “putting the art first.” Despite his health challenges, he navigated three highly ambitious projects for the 2010 Cultural Olympiad for the Playhouse this year: two technically complex mainstage productions and a national tour to five venues. The Playhouse’s six Jessie Richardson Theatre Awards for the 2009/10 season are a reflection of his dedication, professionalism and absolute commitment to the highest production and artistic standards possible.

Colin served as first Technical Director, and then Production Manager at the Playhouse from 1999-2010. Before that, he worked as Production Manager and Technical Director at the Gateway Theatre, Technical Director for Theatre Under the Stars and Karen Jamieson Dance Company, and Production Manager for the Vancouver International Fringe Festival, and lent his time and talents to many productions around the city.
