Job Description / Duties

The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra seeks a dynamic crew leader for the position of STAGE SUPERVISOR
As a member of the Artistic Operations team, reporting to the Director of Production and under the supervision of the WSO Stage Manager, the incumbent will undertake the following responsibilities:
• In cooperation with the WSO Stage Manager, undertakes, directs and oversees the various setup, tear-down, changeovers & concert running requirements for any rehearsals/performances that are official services of the WSO, at all venues.
o Ensuring the correct and ideal setup of the orchestra, as well as triaging any problems, and fulfilling requests, identified at the start of rehearsals/performances.
• Provides input to the Director of Production, to ensure the ideal number of crew are called, while still meeting venue & event requirements.
o Identifying possible overtime situations ahead of their occurrence.
• Reviews all production information in advance, and is prepared for all projects ahead of their first crew call.
• Directs, supervises and delegates tasks to all casual crew called, including the providing of crew callbacks.
• Collaborates with the Artistic Operations team to proactively identify any production challenges and offering solutions in a positive, timely and helpful manner.
• Communicates with all members of the Artistic Operations team & WSO staff by email, SMS, and cell phone.
• Stays up-to-date with emailed information as well as on schedule information found on OPAS Online, the WSO’s scheduling system.
• In conjunction with the WSO Stage Manager, liaises with Centennial Concert Hall house crew to ensure the successful execution of WSO activities.
• Keeps a long-term projects/work list, and proactively works on those projects when time permits.
• Keeps track of equipment inventory, and proactively identifies any maintenance issues. With the approval of the Director of Production, undertakes approved maintenance.
• Liaises with various WSO staff to ensure that all lobby equipment, banners, tech gear & vehicles are properly setup and displayed for Front-of-House activities, and are returned to storage as required.
• Is available for production meetings, as called by the Director of Production or WSO Stage Manager.
• Drives the truck for WSO runouts, as required.
• Ensures that all crew working on WSO calls adhere to the WSO Safety & Health Policy, the Manitoba Workplace Safety & Health Act & Regulations, and any venue-specific policies & conditions. Ensures that all work is done in a safe manner, including proactively identifying potential problems and recommending solutions.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications - Required
• 4-years of experience working as a stagehand; ideally in a union environment.
• Experience delegating to and supervising a team of stagehands.
• Possesses a Class 5 Drivers License, with a clean driving record, and is able to drive/operate a 26-Foot Dock Height Truck, including during possible night-time and winter driving.
• Possesses a Smartphone & knows how to use it - for internet, email and SMS communication.
• Able to communicate clearly and professionally with a variety of stakeholders, including: internal staff, musicians, crew, technical suppliers, venue staff, guest artists; sensitivity to artistic temperament an asset.
• Experience working under tight timelines, with minimal staff & production resources
• A proactive worker, with a positive demeanor, accepting of responsibility – a natural leader to crew.
• Able to lift 50 lbs, including large, bulky & fragile items, on a regular basis, with ease.
Qualifications - Ideally but not Required
• Experience working with, and setting up an orchestra
• Experience working with various theatrical technical systems including fly house, risers, rigging, projection, sound and lighting equipment.
• Familiar with the Centennial Concert Hall.

Additional Information

Position Information
• Position will begin as soon as possible, during the 17-18 season, to ensure crossover between the successful candidate and the current stage supervisor. While training with the current Stage Supervisor, the candidate agrees to work, on an hourly basis, as “first call” for WSO crew calls. During training, wages shall be paid at the prevailing casual stagehand rate, upon successful completion of a WSO timesheet.
• As an employee of the WSO, the terms of employment are subject to an agreement between the WSO and IATSE Local 63, effective the start of the 2018-19 season.
• The incumbent shall be, or shall be able to become, a member of IATSE Local 63 prior to the start of employment.
• The incumbent is required to provide the WSO with a completed criminal record check (along with both the vulnerable sector and Child Abuse Registry checks), at the incumbent’s expense, prior to the start of employment.

• Timeline:
o Late-March 2018: applications & interviews
o Mid-April 2018 through Mid-May 2018: training with current Stage Supervisor
o Mid-June 2018 through Mid-July 2018: training continues during summer season
o August 2018: assumption of role & summer maintenance work as required
o Mid-September 2018: work commences for 2018-19 season

Salary: Hourly with min. weekly full-time guarantee
