Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Stage Technician is responsible for technical services within the facilities that are managed by the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA), which includes the Rozsa Centre, University Theatre, the Reeve Theatre, the Boris Roubakine Recital Hall, the Doolittle Studio, and other venues. Technicians provide live performance support for students and faculty within the SCPA at the University of Calgary as well as off campus client support services.

The average shift consists of 7 hours per day, five days per week, but longer work periods are required. It is also required that the individual can work shift work, weekends and evenings as the booking schedule dictates.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

- Act as the lead stage technician for performances.
- Support the technical needs of the School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA) in all venues and off campus.
- Work as part of a team and support other technicians in the completion of their tasks and assignments.
- Supervise and delegate roles to part-time and student technicians on a per show basis.
- Supervise and provide feedback to the instructor of record for students taking classes and assigned technician duties as part of their academic studies.
- Regular maintenance and upkeep of performance, rehearsal, studio, and classroom facilities and equipment. Delegate major maintenance to the appropriate department.
- Work with other departments (Com-Media, Catering Services, etc.) within the campus infrastructure on behalf of the client.
- Meet with clients to discuss the booking and co-ordination of their event, which includes site tours, campus information, and answer all questions.
- Act as the in-house Audio/Visual technician.
- Act as the attendant for conferences and meetings.
- Set-up and tear down of productions, classes, and meetings.
- Perform other tasks (class set-ups, maintenance, errands, tours, etc.) for all facilities managed by the SCPA.
- Research and recommend products and services to management for consideration of capital equipment upgrades.
- Provide classes with the appropriate technical support.
- Ensure proper and safe use of equipment and facilities by clients and classes.
- Resolve conflicts that may occur in a professional matter.
- Inventory control of consumable products, such as data storage devices, and to advise management of future needed purchases to maintain proper levels.
- Keep an up-to-date inventory of all equipment.

Qualifications / Required Skills

- Professional working knowledge and understanding of theatrical lighting, sound, projection, rigging, and staging equipment and practices.
- Must have the ability to respond effectively to the pressures of a live performance environment, which includes use of time management, communication, and technical skills.
- Must be able to communicate and co-ordinate multiple daily event details effectively with clients and co-workers to achieve the desired result.
- Ability to assure the safety and security of clients and co-workers.
- A good working knowledge of the university environment and organizational skills would be an asset.
- Must be able to work comfortably with computers, both Apple and Windows platforms, and basic software.

Additional Information

We are looking for a full-time theatre technician with general knowledge across a variety of disciplines including lighting, sound, deck crew, projection, stage carpentry, installs and strike, venue and equipment maintenance, client support, and student supervision. The new member will work in tandem with the current heads of audio and lighting in an array of venues and will contribute to our team strength. Compensation for this Technical Job Family Phase 2 position is outlined in the current AUPE/ University of Calgary Agreement: https://www.ucalgary.ca/hr/sites/default/files/teams/239/aupe-collective-agreement.pdf , with remuneration set between $58,000.00 - $82,000.00 dependent on experience. Additionally, the position comes with significant health and educational benefits as well as pension advantages that are unique to a position at a post-secondary institution.

Salary: $58,000.00 - $82,000.00 annually, dependent on experience.
