Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Director of Production and Facility Operations, the Technical Manager is responsible for ensuring the smooth and safe operation of technical aspects of all productions and events created or presented in The GRAND. The Technical Manager is also responsible for safeguarding and maintaining the equipment and physical theatre in efficient working order. The Techncial Manager is the technical point person for all events that involve theatre spaces and services in The GRAND and is a point of contact for clients and provides quotes for technical equipment, services, technical resources. The Technical Manager works with The GRAND’s technical team to prepare quotes for the space and equipment needs of the client.

In addition to the above, the Technical Manager schedules and assigns work for the Technical Crew and is responsible for front line OH&S responsibilities for The GRAND. The Technical Manager maintains client facing relationships with all stakeholders who use facilities in The GRAND and require production services.

The right candidate faces each day with optimism. They are flexible, adaptable to change, a proactive multi-tasker, and are adept at forging relationships within the community and with all internal and external stakeholders of The GRAND. This candidate takes initiative and always goes the extra mile, supporting the team with needed tasks no matter how small, with a positive attitude and image at all times.

Duties include:
● Manage and lead all technical staff
● Supervise all technical crew resources (sound, lighting, technical assistants, production crews)
● Coordinate the Occupational Health and Safety program within the Production Department
● Oversee the technical equipment of the theatre (rigging, lighting, sound, stage)
● Manage all resources for productions, presentations and rentals
● Assist in the preparation of production budgets and estimates related to technical aspects of productions, concerts and special events
● Manage the technical operations budget
● Set technical policies and standards for the operation of the theatre
● Prepare, oversee and coordinate the technical schedule
● Secure appropriate technical resources for each production and event within budget; develop a casual crew roster and alternate department heads
● Supervise and manage production design costing and production construction processes
● Maintain and coordinate an efficient production equipment maintenance program, including maintaining accurate and up-to-date inventories, purchase/upgrade wish list(s) for all technical and theatre equipment
● Supervise maintenance of the equipment and maintain the physical theatre in working order
● Coordinate with the Resident Companies to assist with their work in The Grand spaces
● Assume technical responsibility when needed for all incoming rental clients
● Maintain a clean, safe and secure working environment
● Report all accidents/incidents immediately to the Director of Production and Facility Operations.
● Abide by all company rules and policies as detailed in Human Resources policies
● Ensure that internal communications are as efficient as possible and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the team
● Attend and participate in relevant internal meetings, team meetings, and production meetings.
● Be the primary onsite contact/liaison/representative of The GRAND during events when technical staff are on call
● Work with the all GRAND staff to ensure the building is kept up to The GRAND’s standards

Qualifications / Required Skills

What you must have:
● 5+ years of live performing arts Industry experience as a Technical Manager
● Excellent understanding of all technical aspects of live performing arts and events, including Theatre, Dance, Music and Corporate events
● Post-secondary education, preferably in the performing arts, is considered a strong asset
● Confident, detail orientated and enthusiastic team player with superior interpersonal, communication and organizational skills
● Flexible and able to manage multiple priorities, regularly taking on new responsibilities.
● Intermediate skills in Microsoft Outlook, Google Suite, Word, PowerPoint and Excel, Vectorworks, Q-lab
● Ability to work independently
● Ability to interact effectively with different personality types
● Knowledge and experience with Stage Lighting and Projection, Stage Rigging and Theatre Sound an asset
● Ability to interpret technical and design drawings 


Additional Information

Where you’ll be working:
This position is in The GRAND building located at 608 1 St SW in Calgary, Alberta. Some remote work may be possible.

Details:
This is a full time management role.

Interviews for this position will commence August 23rd, with an ideal start date of mid-September.

Salary: Range $60,000-$65,000 annually, dependent on experience and qualifications
