Job Description / Duties

Main Purpose and Function
The Technical Director (TD) is responsible for directing the provision of all stage services for a variety of shows, productions, and presentations for VCT. The incumbent plans, coordinates, and directs the setting-up, operation and clearing of stage productions under the direction of the Senior Manager, Production. The TD consults with, advises and assists theatre lessees or internal productions on a variety of matters relating to their scenic, sound, lighting, video and stage requirements. All duties are performed with a high degree of professional independence with administrative direction received from the Senior Manager, Production.

The position reports to the Senior Manager, Production and supervises a team of twelve (12) FTE’s which are included positions (IATSE) and any number of casual IATSE employees as needed (between 10 and 250depending on production schedule).
Other key contacts are various VCT departments, as well as City Departments involved with production operations such as Digital Services, IT, Communications, Finance, Cultural Services, Supply Chain, REFM, and HumanResources. There is also considerable contact with external partners such as the arts community, business community, local and international presenters and promoters, event planners, clients, suppliers, ticketing providers, and the Unions.

Specific Duties/Responsibilities
Consults with, advises, and assists theatre lessees, production representatives, the Senior Manager, Production, and related contacts on a variety of matters concerning stage facilities, production stage, scenic, lighting, video and sound requirements as well as standard theatre operational procedures;
Plans and prepares cost estimates for labour, equipment and material requirements; prepares specifications for stage material and equipment;
Plans, coordinates, supervises and performs work for all phases of stage operation and activities for a theatre complex including hanging of drops and rigging, assembly and staging of scenery and props and the installation of audio, lighting and video equipment;
Plans, assigns, and supervises, through subordinate supervisors, the work of stage crew employees; makes recommendations to the Senior Manager, Production on hiring and disciplinary matters for subordinate supervisory staff;
Investigates and recommends improvements to technical theatre operations and facilities; supervises implementation of approved changes (Capital Projects);
Performs back of house inspections and ensures a safe workplace;
Maintains Occupational, Health and Safety records;
Responsible for supervision of work assignments, evaluating performance, coaching, mentoring and training and development;
Performs related work as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Position Requirements

Education and Experience:
University degree in a field related to the Theatre/Venues Management or post-secondary diploma combined with relevant experience in a related industry or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Minimum of ten (10) years working in performing arts venues with head carpenter and stage management experience.
Proven track record of supervisory experience
Experience in current technical industry practices, trends and technology
Large scale touring will be considered an asset

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the methods, practices, techniques, materials, tools, and equipment used in the operation of stage settings, rigging, scenery, lighting systems and facilities for a large theatre complex;
Thorough knowledge of the policies, codes and regulations governing the work performed;
Considerable knowledge of the technical stage requirements of a variety of theatrical productions, shows, and presentations;
Ability to advise and assist theatrical production companies, theatre operations, facilities, and requirements;
Ability to plan, coordinate and direct all phases of stage operations and activities and assign and supervise the work of stage, lighting, audio, video and related employees;
Ability to perform all levels of duties with minimal supervision and exercise a high degree of initiative and technical authority;
Understanding of, compliance with, and enforcement of policies and processes of the City of Vancouver and VCT;
Ability to work to deadlines under pressure;
Ability to meet and deal with a variety of internal and external contracts with tact and authority;
Financial acumen specifically related to theatres and technical productions;
Advanced skills in using relevant software programs including event management software;
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of relevant records, reports, estimates, specifications, technical drawings and related material;
Skill in the use of a variety of tools and equipment common to stage services;
Ability to work non-standard hours in order to perform the duties of the TD;
Physical ability to perform the functions of the work.

Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations:
LPEC
Fall Arrest Training (or be able to complete within the 12 month probation period)
Class B-R – Full Entertainment Field Safety Representative certificate of qualification (or be able to complete within the 12 month probationary period)

Additional Information

The City’s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties

Salary: Pay Grade GR-085: $46.58 to $50.64 per hour
