Job Description / Duties
●Liaise with Stage Managers, Designers, the Pre- Production Manager, and Director of Production
●Develop technical concepts, equipment needs, staff requirements and schedules for the individual shows
●Hire and supervise regular technical venue staff and call casual IASTE 118 staff as needed in all related areas; provide direction, training, support and evaluation
●Evaluate practicality of concepts, create and modify CAD drawings, solve technical and artistic problems, prepare estimates and monitor spending within the assigned budgets
●Source and procure tools, equipment and materials focusing on financial and operational efficiency
●Supervision of load ins, runs, and load outs
●Ensures a safe working environment for the crew and artists on stage and backstage
●Ensure proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment
●Make recommendations regarding capital purchases
●Assist with other Arts Club Theatre Company shows / venues including tours
●Assist the Facilities Manager when required
●Assist with supervision of the scenery & costume shop facility when required
●Assist with the supervision of facilities rentals
Qualifications / Required Skills
●Degree in Technical Theatre combined with a minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a professional live theatre production company OR an equivalent combination of training and relevant experience.
●Supervisory experience in a unionized setting
●Experience working as a collaborative leader
●Experience working with designers and design professionals
●Valid Drivers’ Licence is essential
●Performing Arts Safety Training for Supervisors
●Preference will be given to persons holding additional certificates for one, or all of the following; Firearms Acquisition, FE/LE Certificate, First Aid, Fall Arrest, Pyrotechnics.
Skills and Competencies:
●Extensive knowledge of theatre production including; scenic construction, rigging in a counterweight fly house, LED Lighting, Sound (Digital and Analog), Video and Automation, Live Streaming and Computer Networking
●Working knowledge of relevant computer programs and show control software such as; ETC Ion, Qlab, Isadora, CAD (Vectorworks)
●Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a larger team
●Ability to provide constructive feedback and provide follow- through when engaging with staff and colleagues
●Proven ability to prepare estimates and make recommendations on capital purchases
●Proven ability to exercise good judgement
●Proven ability to maintain professional, positive attitude in stressful situations
●Ability to coach and train staff on best practices as it relates to production elements
●Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing

The Arts Club Theatre Company is Canada’s largest not-for-profit urban theatre company. Moving into its 56th season, the Arts Club offers professional live theatre at three venues, as well as on tour throughout the province of B.C.
Reporting to the Director of Production the Arts Club Theatre Company is currently accepting applications for the position of Technical Director (TD). This position is part of a team of TD’s who oversee the execution of up-to 18 theatre productions per season. Each of the TD’s are responsible for all aspects of production in their venues, and coordinating the incoming shows with the Pre-Production Manager.
To be successful in this role, the incumbent must possess the technical skill and expertise to train, advise and supervise both unionized and non-unionized staff in all related production areas. Additionally the successful candidate will have a proven track record of managing and coaching a staff team, as well as a collaborative approach to problem solving and creative critical thinking.
The Technical Directors for the Arts Club are responsible for supervising a unionized staff team and casual crew of IATSE members. As such, preference will be given to those with experience working with an IATSE Collective Agreement and/or those with experience supervising in a unionized environment.
