Technical Director
Michael J Fox Theatre (Exempt/On-Site)

Built as part of Burnaby South Secondary School, the Michael J Fox Theatre plays an important role in the life of the Burnaby community. Opened in 1993, this professional, community-style theatre offers a beautiful, practical and affordable venue for amateur and professional artists, enhancing the city’s already-rich cultural fabric. The Technical Director is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising, and supporting event set up and equipment support. The Technical Director works directly with clients and client/internal crews to ensure installation of equipment is established in a safe, efficient and appropriate manner to ensure a successful event. This role has a key focus on providing client services, advice, support, and supervision.

The Technical Director will:
• Oversee the entire technical department by ensuring smooth and efficient day to day operations.
• Create and maintain staff schedules, monitor attendance and availability, address shift changes and conflicts, and collaborate with the Business Services Coordinator and Guest Services Manager to find appropriate solutions.
• Train staff. Observe and monitor performance, collect and perform annual employee performance evaluations, and mentor promising employees for potential succession planning.
• Planning, co-ordinating and supervising event installations and operation, and operating equipment as required by the event.
• Supervising and co-ordinating the work of client-supplied or internal crews, training new or unfamiliar crew members, providing leadership to establish high standards of operating efficiency, safe work practices, and client service.
• Offering comprehensive guidance and support to clients for their presentations at the Theatre, including proactive communication well in advance of events. This entails collaborating on lighting, audio, video, and stagecraft designs, as well as seamlessly incorporating external systems introduced by clients.
• Determining the suitability and safety of any equipment brought in to supplement the Theatre’s
inventory, and that the installation and use of such equipment is done to the standards and practices set by the Theatre.
• Assisting in evaluation of systems, fixtures and equipment for purposes of maintenance, overhaul, replacement or upgrade.
• Maintaining records of work performed and engaging in related work as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:
• College-level technical diploma or the equivalent of at least three years full-time experience following the completion of secondary school education
• LPEC certification and First Aid Level 1.
• Demonstrated ability to operate both audio and lighting consoles simultaneously.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the methods, best practices, techniques, tools and equipment employed in stage lighting, audio, video projection and counterweight rigging systems.
• Demonstrated knowledge of related hazards and safety precautions and practices, and to perform applicable maintenance work.
• Demonstrated ability to work at height, and comfort working on ladders.
• Demonstrated ability to work from plans, drawings and sketches and the ability to create same when required.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, written and verbal, with clients and assist them in achieving their goals.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently for many events.
• Enjoys people, is open, approachable, and tactful.
• A valid driver’s license, and able to work flexible hours any day of the week.

Salary: The starting annual salary for this role is $70,000.
