Job Description / Duties

The Senior Technical Producer oversees and supports the planning, production, and delivery of media and technical services required for the successful delivery of Banff Centre programs, projects, events, conferences and exhibitions that occur on both an annual and also a customized basis.

The Senior Technical Producer is responsible for all media production, post-production and technical service activities at Banff Centre, including the technical direction of media production for numerous live events, special events, programming and presenting performances. This position leads teams for live multi-camera and all broadcast projects, and in the coordination of media assets for digital platforms such as Eventiv and Vimeo.

The Senior Technical Producer will ensure that media and technical services are in alignment with Banff Centre’s strategic plan, vision, and mission. The incumbent will support the creation of workflows, systems, and procedures that are efficient, contribute positively to the high-quality experience and success of Banff Centre’s programs, conferences, festivals, events, donor experiences, and promote a workplace culture that is safe, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone.

Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to Managing Director, Events, Production, Marketing and Communication, below are some key accountabilities:

Operational Responsibilities:
• Works with programming and program operations in assessing and planning media asset and support needs, supporting adjudications, and providing ongoing technical assessments.
• Oversees and manages video production including archival capture, multicam capture, field capture, and studio capture, video editing, animation, mastering and conversion, and audio studios.
• Oversees successful delivery of media support services, archival documentation services for programming, video production for marketing and communications purposes, and occasional revenue generating media projects.
• Manages the day-to-day scheduling/booking of media studios, and production activities; ensuring required facilities and resources are booked and entered in scheduling software, including meeting rooms, studios, personnel and required equipment.
• Develops and executes project/program/studio/production schedules and budgets; reconciling and reporting resources used.
• Initiates regular project/program production meetings with appropriate staff and project teams; and monitors project progress so that activity stays on budget and on time.
• Oversees day-to-day studio/production decisions and completes related management administrative tasks ensuring all deliverables are completed on time and on budget.
• Leads Artist/Client Institutional collaboration, reviews and signoff.
Develops accurate, detailed resource plans during program planning cycles. Identifies issues and concerns as they arise and advises on adjustments required.
• Obtains and arranges music rights licensing,
• Manages Banff Centre online platform Vimeo including Collections, Channel, Descriptions, Markups and does live posting publication and removals.
• Manages broader production projects, as assigned, within all programs operations production area.
• Oversees and production manages broader production projects across Banff Centre.
• Acts as lead camera director on all Banff Centre multicam productions.

Annual Planning:
• Develops annual and long-range lifecycle equipment and software plans, equipment replacement, upgrade analysis and recommendations.
• Participates in annual planning of activities within capacity, and annual budget recommendations to support activities.
• Participates in annual planning scheduling of departmental media facilities and equipment resources for upcoming fiscal years including resource planning and costing of crew needs.

Financial Responsibilities:
• Prepares and manages technical and production budgets; and with direction from Managing Director, develops annual production operating plans and budgets. Provides regular financial tracking and forecasting reports. Monitors and controls production and operational budgets ensuring a balanced budget, tracking expenses within budgets, and provides details for budget reconciliation.
• Manages administration tasks undertaken by staff including but not limited to, contracts, billings, collections and tracking, purchase orders, and rentals. Prepares and processes/approves billing, purchase orders, cheque requisitions, petty cash vouchers, reimbursement, insurance and rental agreements and expense claims as required.
• Oversees the billing, as applicable, of all clients, artists, and guests for support services performed in accordance with established procedures.

Human Resource Management, Team Building and Interdivisional Cooperation:
• Enables the Production staff to function as a high performance team by maintaining open communication, providing clear direction, ensuring staff have the competency and opportunity to be successful in their work, and motivating the team towards a culture of positive discretionary performance.
• Ensures team members fully understand their roles, responsibilities, and performance expectations by providing ongoing formal and informal feedback, coaching, and support as they strive to achieve success.
• Provides day-to-day leadership, direction, and supervision to direct reports, monitoring the effective allocation of assignments across the Production staff.
• Ensures a positive and safe work environment, aligned with Banff Centre’s policies including, but not limited to, our code of ethics, anti-harassment policies, contractual obligations, and strategic directions.
• Works closely with the Human Resources Team in all aspects of human resource management including hiring, training, payroll, and discipline to ensure policies, procedures, contractual, legislative, and work culture expectations are met.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications and Educational Requirements
• Completion of university degree in related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
• Minimum of ten years professional experience in media production
• Professional experience in related production leadership roles with strong personnel, scheduling, and budgetary management skills
• Professional experience supervising in a unionized environment.
• Demonstrated leadership in promoting a safe and healthy workplace, and experience in developing risk assessments and safe work practices.
• Working knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations, standards, best practices, and implementation of the same
• Proven project management skills with the capability to manage multiple projects.
• Demonstrated experience with technical assessments and budgeting of media production and post-production projects and A/V management.
• Supervisory budget experience
• Effective under pressure with strength in shifting priorities
• Exceptional organizational and time management skills
• High level of self-motivation with a commitment to client/participant service excellence and a willingness to work flexible hours.
• Proficient with the Microsoft suite of products (e.g., Outlook, Excel, Word and PowerPoint)

Special Requirements
• Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

• In accordance with the terms of employment governing Management/PSP employees, this is a salaried, fulltime position, subject to a 6 month probationary period.
