Job Description / Duties

Oversees the properties department to ensure quality standards and deadlines are met; provides advice, instructions, assistance and training
Conducts preliminary and ongoing discussions with directors, designers, and builders, provides cost estimates and recommendations
Liaises between designers and production staff regarding budgets and costs, including staffing requirements
Provides design input and conducts research to provide guidance to prop builders and buyers
Participates in design presentations, production meetings and attends rehearsals to determine solutions to prop requirements
Maintains an inventory of props, materials, and tools
Establishes and maintains a network of prop experts within the industry with respect to building and acquiring props
Ensures the prop shop is managed in a manner that is in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act
Directs the maintenance of the prop shop to ensure proper supplies, tools, safety equipment and ventilation are all in place
Maintains and ensures the safe usage and storage of stage weapons and pyrotechnics
Consults with fight directors regarding the choice of stage weapons and advises stage managers and performers in the safe staging and handling of prop weapons

Qualifications / Required Skills

Post-secondary theatrical education or equivalent experience
Minimum of 10 years of relevant properties experience
Previous management experience and strong leadership skills
Sound understanding of opera, theatrical process and a strong knowledge of historical styles and practices
Exceptional artistic judgment
Good understanding of woodworking, metal work, fiberglass, plastics, sculpting, mold-making, design, drafting, computer use
Strength in budgeting, planning and ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines and exercise good judgment and initiative
Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities successfully
Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact tactfully with internal staff and external designers
