Job Description / Duties

This is a seasonal position that is typically contracted October through May (30-35 weeks). We do six shows as part of our season, plus a short rental season and the Winnipeg Fringe Festival. Start Date: Fall 2022

Responsibilities

• Ensure smooth operation of shows and technical rehearsals.
• Maintain all sound and related equipment in good working order to avoid any loss of time during set-up, rehearsal or performance.
• In co-operation with the Technical Director, maintain an up-to-date inventory of the sound equipment.
• Participate in the selection of audio equipment, the planning of long-term improvements and long-term maintenance.
• Under the direction of the Composer/Sound Designer, assemble and prepare rehearsal and show files.
• Supervise crew whose primary function or duties are sound-related.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Strong knowledge of current live recording, mixing and editing techniques.
• Strong knowledge of the various types and patterns of microphones and the appropriate uses of each.
• Degree or certificate in audio electronics or equivalent experience.
• Some background in music and musical theatre; ability to read music is an asset.
• Experience in creating and operating sound for the theatre.
• Firm understanding of the MIDI and SMPTE protocols as applied to the computer/electronic creation and operation of sound for the theatre. Experience with MIDI Show Control is an asset.
• Strong knowledge of digital consoles, specifically Digico and Q-Lab.
• Understanding of wiring and patching of sound systems including Aviom monitoring.
• Ability to troubleshoot and repair cables and connectors; soldering an asset.
• When a show has no designer, the ability to create simple soundscape for scene change music, or simple cues as deemed necessary.
• Must be willing to commit to a 6-day work week from September through May, plus facility rentals and optional Fringe Festival. Holidays are difficult to work into a season as the Head of Sound, and must be approved in advance with the Production Manager.
• Must be a member of IATSE local 63 in good standing or willing to join.

Salary: This is an hourly position under an IATSE collective agreement with 40-hour weeks during the scheduled season plus overtime. Hourly: $30.10 for the current season
