Job Description / Duties

The Head Venue Technician is a member of the onsite Technical Theatre team, reporting directly to the Production Manager / Technical Director. The Head Venue Technician is joining a dynamic, energetic and creative professional team, with the responsibility of leading and overseeing all onsite and day-of technical aspects for the wide variety of productions and performances at the ACT Arts Centre. This includes lighting, sound, rigging, stage carpentry, client management, and other tasks. They would also be responsible for assisting the Production Manager / Technical Director in maintaining all theatre facilities and equipment in accordance with safety standards and legal regulations.

The Head Venue Technician coordinates with the rental and presentation clients to fulfill the onsite technical needs of all events. They will provide excellent and professional customer service to a varied field of renters/clients and artists and must be able to work in a fast-paced environment including evenings and weekends. They would also be responsible for assisting with scheduling and supervising crew, and overseeing event execution, with the oversight of the Production Manager / Technical Director.

Key Responsibilities:
• Be the primary onsite point of contact for clients, renters, production teams, and/or other participants of events at the ACT Arts Centre, as assigned by the PM/TD.
• Assist in the management of technical expenses, crew, and theatre supplies
• Assist PM/TD in scheduling and management of all casual crew for events, and completing any performance paperwork as required in a timely manner
• Assist PM/TD in preparation, advancement, and execution of events.
• Maintain a clean and orderly workplace and backstage areas.
• Ensure safety of patrons, performers, and theatre equipment before, during, and after events, including load-in and load out, and emergency management procedures.
• Supervise and monitor all activities in areas accessible to user groups to ensure safe and orderly behavior and procedures as per WCB and WHMIS regulations
• Adhere to the best practices possible of safe work procedures and ethics
• Perform ongoing maintenance as directed or required in the theatre facilities
• Execute thorough building checks and lockups as scheduled.
• Other duties as required by the Production Manager / Technical Director, or Executive Team

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Must have a minimum of 2 years of experience or equivalent training, working in live performance or event production
• Proven ability to effectively manage and provide direction to technical staff and to effectively solve problems in high stress situations
• Proficiency with modern theatre control systems, such as digital audio consoles and lighting boards. Direct experience with DiGiCo and ETC consoles considered an asset
• Must be able to work with diverse groups under tight deadlines, at odd hours, and with the ability to work within the budget, policies, regulations and contractual obligations established by Management and the Board of Directors and enforce these policies, regulations and contracts with fairness, impartiality and good judgment
• The individual should have a high level of computer literacy and be willing to participate in ongoing professional development and education
• Due to the nature of the business the individual will work a flexible work week including evenings and weekends
• Solid working knowledge of all appropriate technical systems including knowledge of computer systems and networking including but not limited to QLab, PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
• Proficiency with computer-based drafting programs such as AutoCAD/Vectorworks considered an asset
• Ability to act as a resource for our users is essential on technical and artistic matters
• Ability to successfully operate in a fast paced flexible environment

Required Licenses, Certificates and Registrations:
• Occupational First Aid Level 1 - WCB
• Ariel Platform/Scissor Lift Ticket
• Fall Arrest Ticket
• Criminal record check with vulnerable sector clearance required

• Preference will be given to persons holding additional certificates for one or all of the following: ActSafe LPEC, BC LE or FE Certifications, Non-Restricted Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL), Pyrotechnician

Salary: $42,000-$46,000 per year based on skills and experience; extended health care benefits
