The duties of the Head Scenic Artist shall include, but not be limited to, the co-ordination of the Scenic Art Department, paint and produce specialty finishes such as marble, wood grain, ageing, breakdown, and other faux finishes on all scenic elements, backdrops, and floor-cloths. The head Scenic Artist is responsible for the disbursement of the assigned budget and delegation of work required for the efficient operation of the department. They shall work with the Technical Director to cost scenic art elements; research historical periods; create texture and colour samples; liaise with designers regarding finishing techniques; purchase paint and supplies; be responsible for the care and maintenance of paint shop and paint equipment; plan and manage onstage paint notes.

Pacific Opera Victoria is currently accepting applications for the nine following seasonal positions for the 2018/2019 season. The seasonal positions are hired from July 1st through June 30th each year, and Pacific Opera’s shop is normally in operation from August to May. Opera Shop staff work under the jurisdiction of IATSE Local 168. Preference will be given to candidates who have five or more years of professional work experience in a shop/theatre environment. The Opera Shop’s normal hours of operation are from 8am-5pm Mon-Fri, but hours of employment will be as required depending on the demands of each production. In addition to hourly wages noted below, POV currently provides 5% in employer RRSP contributions, 5% vacation pay, and 4% in lieu of benefits; as well as access to a health and welfare fund paid by Pacific Opera and administered by the union.
