Position: Audiovisual Engineering Technologist
Summary
The Audiovisual Engineering Technologist will be responsible for validating and reviewing audiovisual (AV) solutions in order to turn bill of materials into AV technical drawing packages for project implementation. Drawing packages include items such as cable risers, device layout, reflective ceiling plans, AV functional drawings, rack layouts and elevations. This role requires extensive experience in AV systems solutions and AV best practices. You will leverage your expertise in electrical and electronic systems to create high performance, user friendly audiovisual solutions.
Responsibilities
• Design and prepare detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and layouts for integrated audiovisual systems using AutoCAD.
• Collaborate with architects, electrical/mechanical engineers, and project teams to ensure proper integration of AV systems within architectural and construction plans.
• Prepare and modify AV system wiring diagrams, device layouts, cable risers, rack elevations, and reflective ceiling plans.
• Assist in the evaluation and testing of audiovisual systems, including control systems, video walls, conferencing solutions, and electronic communication devices.
• Provide technical support during system setup, configuration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of electronic AV equipment and networked components.
• Review and validate system performance through site visits, bench tests, and simulations; provide technical feedback and improvement recommendations.
• Research and recommend AV technologies, materials, and components suitable for specific design and installation requirements.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including system manuals, scope of work, and quality assurance records for each project.
• Coordinate with procurement and project management teams to align design and implementation timelines, budgets, and material lists.
• Support project delivery by responding to technical inquiries from field technicians, installers, and subcontractors during system deployment.
• Stay current with evolving AV and electronics industry standards, tools, and best practices relevant to integrated systems design.
• Interpret and analyze AV system requirements to develop detailed technical specifications and documentation in compliance with ANSI, CSA, and other applicable standards.
• Other duties as required or assigned by company management/supervisor.
Accountability/Reporting
The Audiovisual Engineering Technologist will report to the Manager, Design. Secondary accountability will be to the other management team members, employees, and customers of the company.
Qualifications / Required Skills
Qualifications
• Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electronics Engineering technology, Integrated Engineering or related technical discipline.
• Certifications or formal training in AV systems, engineering, or related fields i.e., Crestron, QSC, Extron training.
• Industry standard: AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist CTS or CTS-D certification required
• 3+ years experience in AutoCAD software
• 3+ years experience developing multi-layered AV schematics and detailed wiring diagrams.
• Solid understanding of audio, video, control, and IP based AV systems and components
• Hands on experience supporting or commissioning AV systems in commercial, educational, entertainment and enterprise environments.
• Ability to collaborate effectivity with engineers, architects, and other stakeholders to integrate audiovisual designs into architectural plans and construction documentation.
• A strong working knowledge of communications systems, AV technologies, and equipment is required.
• Strong problem solving skills and ability to troubleshoot system integration and communication failures.
• Effective communication skills are essential as the role involves collaborating with various teams, clients, and stakeholders to understand project requirements and provide technical support.
• Experience with AV system design software, cabling scheduling tools, and version control for drawings and documentation.
Additional Information
Travel
Be prepared for some out-of-town travel as part of the job requirements. Travel to client’s site, vendor meetings/trade shows may be required.
