Job Description / Duties

About the Role

The Head Lighting Technician is an integral part of the technical team at MRU. They will provide technical support, setup and operation of technical systems with a focus on lighting for the Bella Concert Hall, Wright and Leacock Theatre, Ross Glen Hall, Transalta Pavilion and other MRU Spaces.

Responsibilities
- Coordinating and overseeing all lighting department activities
- Ensure all lighting equipment is set up properly, fully functional and appropriately aligning with the show concept
- Operating the lighting system for shows and rehearsals
- Preparing for and assisting guest operators
- Supervising casual technicians in cooperation with other house technicians
- Provide clients a high level of service
- Inspecting and maintaining the lighting system and lighting equipment
- Maintaining a comprehensive inventory of the lighting department equipment and tools
- Ensure the safety and security of the lighting equipment
- Operate rigging and variable acoustic systems as needed
- Operate and work in lifts and at height
- Set up and operate video equipment as required
- Assist with the setup and strike of all show equipment
- Assist stage and audio technicians as required
- Ensure all work is being carried out in a safe manner in accordance with MRU safety policies
- Report any injuries or damage to the Manager, Theatre and Performance Services
- Complete and submit show reports
- Ensure all communications are efficient and contributing to the effectiveness of the team
- Abide by all University rules and regulations

Physical and Visual Demands
- Required to manage heavy equipment and loads including moving grand pianos, road cases, rigging and truss
- Unloading trucks and trailers
- Managing equipment and loads in excess of 100kg. In most cases assistance is required for heavy loads but the incumbent must be physically able and mentally alert in order to minimize risk
- Required to work in low light
- Must be able to set up equipment in low light and be able to switch between intense and low lighting levels rapidly

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications and Required Skills
- A minimum of 4 years as a stage technician and a minimum of 2 years in a Head Lighting Technician role
- Extensive knowledge of ETC EOS Software and console operation
- Ability to design lighting looks (busk) on the fly
- Strong knowledge of lighting networking
- Experience setting up and running video projection equipment
- Software experience (Qlab, Vectorworks, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Adobe Suite)
- Good general understanding of all technical aspects of theatre and live shows
- Knowledge of stage carpentry, audio and rigging an asset
- Experience in dance, live music and other performing arts and asset
- Good organizational, communication and time management skills
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Must have or be willing to acquire Standard First Aid with CPR certification, Fall Protection Training and WHMIS certification
