Job Description / Duties

Do you have a love for comedy, the drive to work in the entertainment business, and experience in technical production for festivals and live events? Then we’ve got the job for you! Just for Laughs is seeking an enthusiastic, organized, and hard-working individual to join our team in the role of Director of Production Festivals).

As the Director of Production (Festivals), you will work closely with the General Manager, Just for Laughs and Just for Laughs Festival team, to ensure the smooth planning, execution, and delivery of our annual festivals in Montréal and Toronto. Overseeing the Production teams for each Festival, you will be responsible for overseeing all technical and production elements of our Montréal and Toronto Festival properties including staffing, budgeting, artist advancing and ensuring everything runs like clockwork! The successful applicant will have an overall love of comedy and previous similar experience in technical direction, production and stage management for live events and festivals, paired with strong organizational skills and the ability to multi-task and function in time-sensitive and high-pressured situations. The applicant should be prepared to work long hours.

Duration: This is a full-time position, starting December 2021/January 2022.
Location: Montreal, QC (with some travel required)

Responsibilities include the following:

  • Oversee and manage all technical and production aspects for the Just for Laughs Festivals in Montréal and Toronto;
  • Create and manage production budgets, complete show settlements, and assist in the creation and completion of feasibility studies for potential festival shows or events;
  • Oversee the production teams for Just for Laughs Festivals including recruitment, hiring, training ensuring all onboarding processes are adhered to;
  • Work as a key member of the Just for Laughs Festival department to ensure the smooth planning and delivery of all festival shows and events maintaining positive relationships with all festival talent and their contacts;
  • Negotiate and manage suppliers, service contractors, and designers;
  • Assist the General Manager in advancing venue and local labour contracts;
  • Responsible for contracting, scheduling, administration, basic accounting, and logistics for all technical personnel and equipment;
  • Organize and perform site visits;
  • Propose or create and maintain any sets or technical designs, as required;
  • Create, maintain, and implement procedures and plans for the Production team;
  • Ensure that occupational health and safety procedures are implemented and followed throughout production;
  • Co-Manage the Just For Laughs’ warehouse and keep inventory of all JFL Festival stock, in coordination with the JFL Director of Production (Touring and Special Events);
  • Work closely with all Directors, Producers, Artists and their Representatives, as well as with other departments to advance all artists and show needs for Festivals in Montréal and Toronto;
  • Work closely with General Manager on operations elements such as venue rentals, accreditation, security, policies and procedures, ticketing, front of house / audience management, and FOH staff hires;
  • Work in a team environment with all production team members;
  • As well as everything logically, implicitly, and incidentally related thereto.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will have:

  • Five (5) years of experience in managing production for live shows, festivals, or in event production management;
  • Professional training in show production or project management;
  • Experience in stage management, technical installation/operation, or theatrical design is an asset;
  • Experience in creating and managing large production budgets for within a festival context or for multiple venues/large-scale projects;
  • Bilingualism; English and French
  • Strong planning, operational and execution skills;
  • The knowledge to negotiate rates and deals with industry suppliers;
  • Skilled in expense forecasting and tracking, along with basic accounting skills;
  • Proven track record in recruiting, managing and motivating a team;
  • Excellent time management, organizational and administrative skills;
  • Capacity to work under pressure and meet multiple deadlines;
  • Strong interpersonal and oral/written communication skills;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office. Experience with Photoshop, AutoCAD or Vectorworks is an asset;
  • Willingness to undertake challenging work that does not conform to regular schedules; including long hours, some nights and weekends;
  • Valid driver’s license.

Salary: 70000$/yearly
