Job Description / Duties

The Canadian Badlands Passion Play is currently accepting applications for a Designers for our new production in the summer of 2016. This will be the inaugural year for a new script based on the Gospel of Luke called ‘For All The Nations’ being written by Barrett Hileman. The approximate dates of the contract would be from April – July 2016 with preproduction meetings in the month’s prior. Specific dates have not yet been confirmed and will be worked out with the successful candidate and the rest of the team. All designs created have to be realistic in relation to the company’s equipment, timelines, staff, and budget.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Composer/Sound Designer
The Composer/ Sound Designer is responsible for translating the text of the show and directors vision for the show into a musical/sound design/score. In creating the soundscape, the designer is artistically responsible to the writer and directors of the show. Outdoor speakers are ‘hidden’ through out the set to surround the audience in sound. Composer/Sound Designer will work with the Head of Sound to integrate the sound into the production.

Costume Designer
The Costume Designer will work with the Director’s vision to create the look of each character by designing clothes and accessories the performers will wear in performance. Depending on their style and complexity, costumes will be made, bought, and revamped out of existing stock. As an outdoor production, costumes are subject to all types of weather and terrain. The Costume Designer will also help manage and supervise the Wardrobe department with the Head of Wardrobe.

Set and Props Designer
The Set and Props designer is hired to create the best possible setting/scenery for a production that will serve both the playwright and the director’s interpretation of the work. As an outdoor production with an existing ‘set’ building, the Passion Play has a unique stage environment. The Set and Props Designer will be working to create designs for a theatrical production that must withstand the forces of nature for an extended period of time. Structural carpentry knowledge is an asset.

Additional Information

Experience that would prove an asset to the position include:
working with a volunteer or community theatre organization;
working with an outdoor theatre company and/or events;
leading and collaborating on projects with large groups;
collaborating on new works.
