The Comedy Stage Managers are responsible for providing
high-quality production support to sketch comedy troupes during the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival. Stage Managers oversee technical rehearsals, act as the liaison with sketch troupes during the festival, learn and run cues for a large number of shows throughout the festival. Stage Managers are required for the stages within the Theatre Centre, Randolph Theatre and/or other headliner venues.
1. Oversee Technical Rehearsals – prepare for and run efficient technical rehearsals with troupes, learn and program cues for lights, audio and video, work with and assist the troupes’ stage managers (if any), troubleshoot any issues that come up in rehearsal, ensure troupes receive orientation to the venue and the Festival’s procedures/rules.
2.Running Performances – liaison with front of house and talent to ensure shows start on time, run lighting, audio and video cues, monitor the theatre during performances and
respond to any emergencies or needs inside the theatre.
3.Maintain Theatre Spaces and Equipment – conduct equipment checks on a daily basis, ensure the inside of the theatre is tidy, safe and ready for audience and talent, troubleshoot and maintain equipment as needed.
4. Administration – complete paperwork with troupes (waivers, payment slips etc.), provide troupe payments at the completion of shows, write and distribute performance
reports, provide input on festival awards, attend training sessions and festival post-mortem meeting.
o Previous experience stage managing sketch comedy and/or
improvisation is required;
o Must be a flexible, adaptable person, able to make quick judgment calls and adjustments on the fly;
o Experience working with a broad range of artists from emerging/student comedians to celebrity talent is an asset;
o Proven supervisory and /or artist liaison experience;
o Must be able to follow an agreed-upon work plan and work with confidence and independence;
o Proven ability to be resourceful, detail-oriented and adhere to schedules and procedures;
o A broad knowledge of theatrical production equipment and software (lighting, audio and video projection) is required. (QLab software and ETC Element lighting
board are used.)
o Must have a great sense of humour, and be a personable, welcoming representative of the Festival.
o The ideal candidate is available every afternoon/evening between February 27 –March 12 (with 2-3 dark days within this schedule).
o Ability to work long hours when required (up to 10
-hour days) with scheduled meal and rest breaks.
o The ability to lift and carry at least 20 lbs, and to do hands-on physical work
Salary: $15-$20/hour depending on experience
