Job Description / Duties

Call for Assistant Designers – Set/Props, Costume, Lighting

In an effort to heighten awareness of the opportunities available and to broaden the reach of our recruitment efforts, we are posting multiple contract positions for Assistant Set Designers, Assistant Costume Designers, and Assistant Lighting Designers for our 2021 season. These positions report to the Associate Director of Production and are part of the Production team. The Assistant Designers will have a close relationship with the Technical Directors and Heads of Departments.

Since the season is yet to be publicly announced, we are listing approximate date ranges to reflect the contract length for each production. This schedule is subject to change as public health information and restrictions evolve. There will be events where Assistant Designers may be required to attend prior to their official contract start date (TBD virtual and/or on location). More details will be provided to candidates who are selected for interviews.

Contract Option #1 – Set/Props, Costume, Lighting (3 contracts)
• 2 plays (approximately 90-105 minutes)
• The Assistant Lighting Designer will also participate in a series of 90-minute concerts
• Contract length: on or about Monday, May 10 to Sunday, August 15 (subject to change)

Contract Option #2 – Set/Props, Costume, Lighting (3 contracts)
• 4 plays (approximately 90-105 minutes)
• Contract length: on or about Monday, May 10 to Saturday, August 28 (subject to change)

Responsibilities:
• Assistant Set/Props Designer responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Assist the Set Designer on specific productions by following through the visual aspects of the productions and interpreting drawings for props and sets
o Research and acquisition of photographic reference and distribute this information to the various departments and craftspeople
o Assist in the building of the set model
o Assist with crossover items between set/props and costumes as required
o Compile all paperwork for archiving of production
• Assistant Costume Designer responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Assist the Costume Designer on specific productions by following through the visual aspects of the productions and interpreting drawings for costumes
o Research and acquisition of photographic reference and distribute this information to the various departments and craftspeople
o Consult with the Buyer to book a driver for shopping trips and pick up needs
o Assist with crossover items between set/props and costumes as required
o Compile all paperwork for archiving of production

• Assistant Lighting Designer responsibilities include but are not limited to:
o Assist the Lighting Designer and Head Electrician during the creation of the lighting used to illuminate live stage performances
o Prepare floor plans, cue sheets, tracking sheets, plots and other forms for the documentation of the lighting design
o Prepare an accurate sketch of all lamps as focused
o Maintain tracking information, cue sheets, and patch sheets during lighting sessions
o Compile all paperwork for archiving of production

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:
• Experience working as a Designer or Assistant Designer in a theatre environment
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
• Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task
• Self-motivated
• Lighting: Proficient in AutoCAD/Vectorworks and Lightwright
• Set/Props or Costume: Proficient in Photoshop, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite
• Set/Props: Experience with 3D printing is an asset, but not a requirement
• Experience working in outdoor venues is an asset, but not a requirement

Salary: Weekly Fee Range: $820 to $1025 based on a 44-hour work week, as per the Stratford Festival’s Assistant Designer yearly salary levels
