Job Description / Duties

As Assistant Production Manager, your contribution will significantly impact the wellbeing of the wider community. We place a high priority on community engagement, from our flagship education program – the Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra – to programs and activities for over 15,000 elementary, junior, and senior high school students in a typical year. The orchestra of 37 musicians, led by Music Director Holly Mathieson, has repeatedly been praised for its versatility and flexibility, performing everything from baroque to pops to jazz with equal finesse. As Assistant Production Manager, you’ll be part of a performing arts organization that not only brings joy and inspiration to thousands of audience members, but one that also conducts many accessible community programs, including performances in local public libraries, free community concerts including our popular Family series, and online concerts.

About the Role
The Assistant Production Manager (APM) is a key member of the production team and works collaboratively to support the creative vision of the Music Director and other partners. The APM assists the Production Manager, working with technical and artistic personnel on the timely planning, communication, and execution of stage, logistical, and technical requirements for Symphony Nova Scotia productions and leads the advance and execution of Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra (NSYO) productions. The APM models effective and positive professional behaviour and communication to support a safe, respectful, and productive work environment.

They have training in theatre production or stage management and experience organizing the technical operations of live performing arts. The APM is familiar with or has aptitude for the practical use of technology and computer software including Microsoft Office, Teams, Orchestra Planning & Administration System (OPAS), and design and drafting applications.

The successful applicant will be required to have reliable internet access and availability for irregular work hours including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, working a minimum of 35 hours per week. Occasional travel outside of Halifax for run outs and overnight tours will be required. The successful applicant must be able, individually or with a team, to lift, carry, push, and pull items such as chairs, music stands on racks, risers, instruments (including percussion, harpsichord, organ), equipment, etc. (150–200 kg).

The successful applicant must have a valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) with a good driving record and be able to drive a 16-foot one-tonne truck competently and confidently.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education and Experience:
• Formal training in theatre production or stage management or equivalent;
• Experience organizing the technical operations live performing arts.
Skills:
• Familiarity with or aptitude for the practical use of technology and computer software including Microsoft Office, Teams, Orchestra Planning & Administration System (OPAS), design and drafting applications;
• Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent with good driving record;
• Ability to drive a one-tonne truck competently and confidently.

Additional Information

This is a seasonal position, with employment generally during the Symphony season from September through May. Base salary is may be adjusted according to the successful applicant’s experience and abilities.

Salary: $34,000 for 40 weeks
