Job Description / Duties

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the Stage Manager, the Apprentice Stage Manager will be a key member of the Stage Management team for Pacific Opera Victoria’s 2022 production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni. The Apprentice Stage Manger will provide key supports to the rehearsal, technical rehearsal, and performance process including attending rehearsals, performances, and production meetings; supporting the stage management and production departments at Pacific Opera.

DUTIES:
Under the guidance of the Stage Manager and Assistant Stage Managers, the Apprentice Stage Manager will:

• Liaise with artistic, creative and technical production staff as required to support the execution and production of a mainstage opera production
• Assist with scheduling of rehearsals, costume fittings, and pre-show hair and makeup calls
• Tracking of performer blocking and entrance and exits, with particular focus on chorus movement
• Distribute schedules to artistic, production, and administrative staff
• Help to manage traffic flow of large groups of performers, supporting safe movement throughout the theatre, especially backstage
• Create show-specific paperwork to facilitate the smooth running of the production
• Make paging announcements in the theatre for performer entrances
• Attend weekly production meetings
• Take production meeting minutes and distribute to artistic, production, and administrative staff
• Comply with Health & Safety policies, and work with Stage Manager to ensure staff and artist compliance
• Liaise with Front of House and Box Office staff to ensure smooth performance operations

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Experience in technical theatre production
• Positive attitude and self-motivated
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, and independently on project-based work
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Good interpersonal skills, and courteous with staff, artists, and partners
• Keen attention to detail
• Excellent organizational skills
• Aptitude for learning new technology and proficient with computer applications including Word, Excel, and Outlook
• The ability to read and follow a vocal score is an asset
• Preference will be given to candidates enrolled in a post-secondary theatre program
• Ideal candidate with be familiar with the arts and has an interest in music and theatre

Additional Information

This position is funded through the Student Work Placement Program. The successful applicant must be:
• Enrolled in a recognized Canadian PSE institution (university, college, CEGEP, polytechnic)
• Legally entitled to work in Canada
• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status in Canada
