Training the Eye

1-Day Workshop

Training the Eye is a two session exploration (comprise of this workshop and a roundtable) of the dynamics of colour design for casts with diverse skin tones and discussion on best practices for production and design to facilitate a stress-free process. The inspiration is “why can’t we see their faces?”.

This full day workshop is anchored in light and pigment-vision colour theory and will demonstrate the interrelationship of diverse skin tones, lighting, and costume elements, for good face visibility. Strategies for replacing incandescent with LED will be explored. The objective is to create a greater understanding of the dynamics of colour design for casts with diverse skin tones. We hope that individuals take this learning back into their theatres and performance venues.

Details:

Colour 1.0 Incandescent - 3 Hours - 09:30-12:30

• Light and pigment-vision colour theory
• Analysis of underlying colour of diverse skin tones in incandescent white light, lightwalkers with grey tee shirts, and costume elements
• Exploration of incandescent lighting palette scenarios: various saturations; single, double, triple hang

Colour 2.0 LED - 3 Hours - 14:00-17:00

• Exploration of strategies to replace incandescent with colour mixing LED, using up to five manufacturers’ current release of 5 to 8 colour engines
• In conjunction of colour tools of ETC Eos recent release 3.2 software
• Lightwalkers with grey tee shirts and costume elements

Presenters: Sholem Dolgoy (he/him) and Rachel Forbes (she/her)

Sholem Dolgoy has worked nationally and internationally as a lighting designer for over 50 years in performing arts and entertainment, corporate and special event, exhibit, and some film and television. He has been an educator for over 40 years, and many former students are valued colleagues. For the Associated Designers of Canada, he led the negotiations for the original 1983 ADC-PACT contract. He is proud to be a Charter Member of IA ADC659.

Rachel Forbes is an award-winning, Toronto-based Set and Costume designer creating for theatre, dance, opera and film. Her designs have been seen on stages and site specific locations all across Canada and she is a board member for the Associated Designers of Canada and IATSE Local ADC659. Much of her work centres stories of the African diaspora in North America and beyond.
