Job Description / Duties

Summary Statement:

The Wardrobe Manager is accountable to the Production Director for the leadership and management of the Wardrobe Department of the Company and School and for maintaining and improving of the production standards of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Liaison with Artistic Staff, Designers and Suppliers; manage all wardrobe projects to ensure they are finished on time and on budget. 
  • Preparation and communication of all costume requirements, and schedules for each production/performance including special events, with input from Director of Wardrobe 
  • Facilitate coordination between School and Company on wardrobe needs 
  • Final review of all production schedules with Director of Production, including Technical Director and Stage Management as needed 
  • Development and Maintenance of comprehensive documentation and archival records for each show in the Company Repertoire (Seasonal and Historical). 
  • Work in an efficient and timely manner to meet the deadlines of the wardrobe department. 
  • Assessment and oversight of all wardrobes purchasing; issuing and reconciliation of purchase orders and payments requests. 
  • Review and sign off on all wardrobe payroll submissions (except touring crew) 
  • Communicate (weekly) updates on all projects etc. to the Director of Production 
  • Scheduling and oversight of fittings. 
  • Ensure a high level of customer service to all internal and external clients 
  • Develops and maintain excellent relationships with Director of Production, Artistic Director, Company Stage Manager, Head Carpenter, Crew members, venue representatives and Suppliers, and all other internal business partners 
  • Works to build positive working relationships with Wardrobe Staff, Company Management, Stage Management, 
  • Artistic, School, Communications, and Development. 
  • Lead, monitor and provide regular performance feedback to Cutters, Sewers, Footwear Manager and School Wardrobe Personnel 
  • Recommendations to the Director of Production on staffing and working conditions focusing on key performance indicators Setting clear performance objectives; prepares and delivers annual performance evaluations 
  • Continually reinforce the strategies, values and operational policies of the RWB through effective communication 
  • Actively participate in decision making and problem solving strategies 
  • Other duties or special projects as assigned by the Director of Production 
  • Safety and Health Compliance 

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education and Qualifications:

  • A university degree in fine arts specializing in Theatre Production or equivalent experience 
  • Creative ability as demonstrated by a portfolio of work is required 
  • Five years’ experience working in a ballet company/dance or performing arts wardrobe department 
  • Previous experience in a touring environment is essential 
  • IT skills including knowledge of Word, Excel and Outlook 
  • Demonstrated ability to sew 
  • Demonstrated ability in managing a schedule and budget for large wardrobe projects 
  • Excellent verbal, oral and written communications skills 
  • Employment with Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet requires a Clear Criminal Background Check and Child Abuse Registry Check at the expenses of the employee.

  • Ability to build lasting internal business relationships Interpersonal 
  • Outstanding sewing, tailoring, and pattern drafting skills, including the ability to identify pattern markings and instructions 
  • Extensive knowledge of fabric, suppliers and sewing techniques 
  • Extensive knowledge of costume construction for ballet 
  • Proficient in writing and communication skills; able to manage internal relationships tactfully and respectfully 
  • Detail oriented 
  • Ability to lead a team of skilled employees 
  • Able to multitask on more than one project at a time
