Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Faculty Administrator and taking task assignments from the Theatre Department Head, the incumbent is responsible for managing and maintaining the Department's technical resources and scenic elements; designing and drafting construction drawings using a computer design program; quantifying and estimating material costs, research and purchasing materials and hardware for construction of scenic elements; constructing, painting, mounting and striking of stage settings and supervising the scene shop; maintaining the Department's theatrical lighting and sound equipment by performing electrical and/or electronic repairs; installing lighting and sound equipment for Departmental use; supervising and maintaining the flying operations of the Theatre; developing safety training programs and enforcing safety regulations in the scene shop and the theatres; assisting in the instruction of stagecraft and supervising safe scene shop procedures; serving as the Technical Director on all Department productions; supervising student assistants; and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

- Graduation from Grade 12
- Post-secondary training in scenic/stage carpentry and technical direction for theatre
- Minimum 3-5 years directly related professional or university theatre experience
- Ability to read and quantify design drawings and construct scenery from the drawings
- Experience in drafting construction drawings, preferably using a computer design program (Vectorworks)
- Experience working with a counter-weight fly system
- Experience hanging and focusing lights in a fly gallery
- Sound reinforcement and sound cue construction skills
- Demonstrable ability to repair, install and modify the wide range of electronics, electrical and mechanical equipment used in the Theatre Department. Welding experience required.
- Experience developing and enforcing theatre safety regulations and procedures
- Experience working with and supervising students
- Ability to organize workload and adhere to production schedules
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally
- A suitable combination of education, training and experience may be considered

Salary: $4,095.26 - $5,526.21 per month
