Job Description / Duties

• Reporting to the Assembly Hall Community Cultural Coordinator or the Todmorden Mills Museum Coordinator, the Theatre Technician is responsible for overseeing the technical aspects of productions occurring in The Assembly Hall Performance Hall or the Papermill Theatre. The technician will also work with other technical staff, both professional and amateur, provided by various rental groups.
• Perform a variety of technical theatre duties that support live performances and other events at the Assembly Hall or the Papermill Theatre as required.
• Perform or monitor the operation of sound and lighting boards and other audio visual equipment during rehearsals, performances, conferences and special events.
• Perform duties that cover all aspects of technical theatre, including hanging and focusing of lighting equipment, set-up and strike of audio visual equipment, supervision of set load-in, installation and strike, repairing and maintaining theatrical equipment.
• Act as primary site contact for clients during rental events, liaising with the performance client, stage management and members of the public and work collaboratively with other professional and amateur technical staff on site.
• Perform a variety of duties that support permitted events and onsite programs, including: Open and close site, oversee building security and fire safety and evacuation, as required; Set up and/or take down furniture and equipment for various events; Assist with Front-of-House management, including audience management, patron seating, volunteer usher supervision, performer and audience safety, concession; Attend scheduled staff meetings, training sessions and fire drills; Maintain rooms or sites cleanliness, during functions; Other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Completion of an accredited post-secondary program in technical theatre or the equivalent combination (2 years or more) of experience and education.
• Ability to run computerized sound and lighting boards in a performance setting
• Ability to perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on lighting and sound equipment
• Ability to perform and/or supervise lighting equipment hanging, focussing, level-setting, and other technical aspects of performance pre-production
• Experience setting up and operating various AV equipment
• Ability to perform moderately strenuous physical tasks, including table and chair set ups.
• Capable of working with minimal supervision and responding proactively to client requests
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with other staff, facility clients, volunteers and the public.
• Ability to work cooperatively as part of a team
• Lift and Fall Arrest training or a willingness to complete this training
• Standard First Aid and CPR training or a willingness to complete this training
• Stage carpentry and/or rigging experience is an asset
• Experience setting up and operating various AV equipment
• Comfortable working at heights and ladders and Genie lift
• Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the provisions that apply to this work
