Job Description / Duties

Program dates: April 13, 2015 - August 28, 2015

This Practicum* program provides the opportunity for participants to advance their creative, technical, and logistical skills working in video production. Practicum participants work and learn through exposure to a wide range of projects under supervision and mentorship from Banff Centre staff, faculty, associated practicums, and artists.

Practical skills are matured through hands-on video production, including studio and location set-up, lighting, assisting the camera crew, and operating camera. These skills would be applied to a range of production and program styles. Organizational, logistical, and diplomacy skills are exercised through assistance to the camera crew. Duties include loading/unloading grip and camera equipment, marking and operating clapperboards, keeping meticulous and accurate camera notes and production reports, transcribing, charging batteries for camera and accessories, offloading camera media, and ensuring ongoing communication between production and post-production crews.

Over the course of the program, Practicum participants will collaborate with producers, directors, camera operators, sound recordists, and video editors on a wide range of project genres including (but not limited to): marketing/promotional, documentary, and live capture. Practicum participants will also have the opportunity to attend formal Banff Centre lectures, workshops and events, and expand their personal artistic network.
Working closely with Film & Media staff and artists, the Video Practicum will assist with a variety of projects, from inception and development, through to completion and delivery.

Qualifications

  • A production background, and good understanding of the production process 
  • Experience working with camera team, videographers 
  • Understanding of film and television lighting for studio and location scenarios 
  • Familiarity with a variety of HD Video cameras including professional broadcast and DSLR with a keen interest to excel in an EFP workflow 
  • Experience working with sound recordists and video editors is an asset 
  • Strong organizational abilities and strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Highly computer literate with experience in Microsoft Suite 
  • Excellent diplomacy skills, with a high level of confidence 
  • Keen interest craft of video/filmmaking and an eagerness to broaden experience 
  • Willingness to learn from a variety of crew sizes and members 
  • *The Practicum program was previously known as the Work Study Program
