Reporting to the Production Manager, the Technical Director (TD) is responsible for the coordination and management of all activities related to Scenic Carpentry, Scenic Art, Properties, Stage Carpentry, Lighting, and Audio Departments for Neptune’s Main Stage and Studio Theatre Productions, and all technical activities in both venues. The TD evaluates all Production Department activities for safety compliance and ensures Neptune’s Safe Working Practices are being adhered to. The TD reports to the Production Manager, and serves as the direct supervisor for the heads of Departments listed above, as well as the Assistant Technical Director and Casual Crew.
Hours of work will be irregular, and will include evenings and weekends. Most work hours will be spent within Neptune’s Argyle St. facilities, but regular visits to Neptune’s construction shop and occasional trips to suppliers will be required.
This role is supervisory, and physical work required is minimal.
A strong Technical Director needs to be highly organized, tenacious, and have excellent time management. The TD must be able to balance the artistic goals of each Neptune production against the time, budget, and skill sets available. The TD must have excellent people skills, as they need to communicate requirements, constraints, and expectations with a wide variety of artistic, technical, and administrative personnel with varying backgrounds and priorities, through various channels including: telephone, email, written, and in person conversations.
The TD will have good general computer skills, and specific experience with CAD programs, especially AutoCAD and Vectorworks.
The TD should have a wide breadth of knowledge in theatrical protocols and methodology, as well as the cultural environment of theatre as a whole. The TD needs to draw from, and be open to, many sources for inspiration. The TD should be able to appraise the skill of each crew person and their appropriate role within a production.
