What's New > CHRC Newsletter - September 2016
It’s been a busy summer for CHRC with the launch of Talent to Lead (T2L), the revision of the new HR Management Toolkit, and setting up the Work Experience employers for the first time.
Here’s where we’re at and what we can look forward to in the coming weeks.
In this issue!
The interest in T2L is what we thought it would be and more. The website has had thousands of hits. The inquiries keep rolling in. With a September 15 deadline for applications, we are lining up the selection committee for the first review of applicants, to shortlist for a second submission and a final selection.
There is room for only 18 participants in cohort 1 (24 participants in cohort 2), and interest is high from across the country and across the sector: we will be faced with difficult choices. Nonetheless, if the program is successful we will have launched a 42 skilled, talented and confident cultural leaders to fill the top management ranks in Canadian cultural organizations and institutions.
We are pleased to be working with an excellent firm, Wiliams HR Consulting, to develop and deliver the 10 webinars (and potentially elearning modules) for the mentorship teams, based on CHRC’s revised HR Management Toolkit. Their expertise in HR Management adds depth to our tools (see below).
One of the very important steps forward we have taken this summer is the establishment of a partnership with Hautes études commerciales (HEC) in Montreal which has a well-developed mentorship program for cultural managers: Mentorat culturel. We will work with HEC to identify the French participants in the second cohort (call for applications to be launched in December) and to develop the French webinars.
Cohort 1 will run from December 2016 to October 2017; cohort 2 will run from April 2017 to February 2018.
Much time and energy have been/are being devoted to the revision of the tools in CHRC’s HR Management Toolkit, which will be released in their second edition in October. Revisions have been made by consultant Sibyl Frei and reviewed by the PATAC members of our Advisory Committee for 11 of the tools. A twelfth tool on Succession Planning was written by Pascale Landry in Quebec in partnership with Compétence culture (our PATAC member in Quebec). All the tools are being prepared for translation and layout. Their fresh new covers will catch your eye.
Going forward, CHRC will not be selling the tools individually. They will be available only in the Toolkit. Here is its Table of Contents:
[Note to readers: if you need the HR Management Toolkit before the second edition is released, go ahead and purchase it now on our website and we will undertake to send you the second edition when it is out…]
Imagine Canada has released a very interesting study on Myths about Young People and Nonprofit Work which cultural managers will want to have a look at. While recognizing the leadership and succession challenges that we have already identified in the cultural sector, it identifies an equally big challenge to be aware of:
As big a problem as leadership succession, is ensuring that nonprofits can attract and retain young workers in the early stages of their careers.
It debunks the following myths:
An interesting read.
The Canada Council has released details and dates for the introduction of its new funding programmes. In case you missed the announcement.
For over a decade CHRC has had the benefit and pleasure of Liz Shorten’s wise council and deft touch in all things related to the film and television/screen industry – as a consultant, a committee member, a Board member, a connector, confidante and advisor. One who knows her industry from top to bottom, inside and out. We have been very fortunate to have had her loyalty and support for so long. She leaves a big gap as she moves on to new horizons. Thank you Liz for years of service as a friend and colleague!
