Job Description / Duties

Position Summary:
As a member of the Artistic Operations team, the Operations Managermanages all aspects of day-to-day orchestra operationsand production requirementsto ensure that all performancesarepresented at the highest artistic level. The Operations Manager reports to the Vice-President, Artistic Operations & Education.

Duties and Responsibilities include:
• Attendance at all VSO rehearsals and concerts in all venues where the VSO performs, acting as stage manager and OFA II first aid attendant. Confirmation of staging requirements in all venues. Primary liaison with venue management and technical staff for contractual and technical details.

• Developingexcellent working relationship with Music Director,senior management, Orchestra, stage crew, guest artists, vendors, theatre staff, VSO School of Music staff, and all other departments in the Vancouver Symphony Society (VSS).

• Maintaining stage and theatre conditions according to the requirements of the AFM Local 145 VSS-VMA Collective Agreement and, in collaboration with the Orchestra Personnel Manager, supervising the application of this agreement onstage.

• In collaboration with OrpheumTheatre technical staff (Head Carpenter/Assistant Technical Director and Head Electrician), preparing and distributing technical information and production showfileto casual stage crew.

• Hiring, supervision, and payroll of IATSE casual stage crew, in accordance with the VSS-IATSELocal 118 Master Agreement. Primary liason between the union local and the VSS. Participation in negotiations of the Master Agreement.

• Leading all production and logistical arrangements for tours, and accompanying the orchestra on tours.

• Obtaining technical advance information from guest artists and tour managers. In collaboration with the Artistic Operations Department, ensuring the execution of guest artist contracts and riders.

• Providing production estimates for and contracting of all instrument and equipment rentals, instrument & equipment transport, keyboard tuning.

• Overseeing the inventory and maintenance of VSO instruments and equipment, and identifying areas for capital improvements and investment for senior management.

• Providing support for VSO auditions, pre- and post-concert talks, chamber music, and other ancillary events.

• Tracking of concerts for SOCAN and for performing rights requirements.

• Attendance in the VSO administration offices on a regular basis. Administrative responsibilities include budgeting,productionscheduling, preparing and tracking of concert information, and management of other administrative projects, as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Qualifications:
• Excellent organizational skills, and faultless attention to detail
• Effective oral and written communication, interpersonal, leadership, and supervisoryskills
• Strong time management skills, with ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and flexibility to work early mornings, late evenings, and weekends.
• Reliable, energetic, dedicated, diplomatic, creative problem solving ability, sound judgement
• Minimum of three years experience in Artistic Operations or Production with another symphony orchestra or performing arts organization preferred
• Undergraduate degree in an Arts field or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Proven experience and in-depth knowledge of the performing arts, with a solid background in technical theatre, is essential for this position
• Musically literate, with ability to read scores, and a knowledge of the orchestral repertoire and industry is a significant asset
• Proficiency with administrative and creative software including: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Vectorworks or AutoCAD.
• Valid British Columbia Driver’s Licence
• Willingness to take Worksafe BC Occupational First Aid Level II Course
