Job Description / Duties

We are seeking a skilled and customer-focused Technical Director to join our team at the Mary Winspear Centre in Sidney, BC. The successful candidate will oversee all technical aspects of theatre and event operations, as well as provide AV support for Client Services bookings (conferences, meetings, and events). This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to ensuring high-quality experiences for show and event organizers and attendees. 

Key Responsibilities:

Charlie White Theatre & Bodine Hall: 

In conjunction with the Theatre Manager advances all necessary technical elements of a production and event with clients, artists, tour managers, and agents including; lighting, sound, and staging 

Manages and assigns technical staff, in consultation with the Theatre Manager, based on production advance 

Maintains a positive relationship with and puts out calls to IATSE union dispatch to fill technical shifts as necessary 

Orients technical staff regarding safety, technical characteristics, technical equipment, and venue policies and procedures 

Maintains a production quality of the highest standard 

Performs other duties as assigned by the Theatre Manager 

Maintains and monitors the condition of technical equipment and inventory including lighting, sound, and staging; in conjunction with the Theatre Manager arranges for large repairs and/or capital replacements within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment 

Arranges and verifies backline and other rentals from third party vendors 

Makes recommendations to the Executive Director and Theatre Manager regarding capital purchases of technical equipment and theatre infrastructure 

Involved in hiring decisions for technical staff with Executive Director and Theatre Manager 

Maintain and update internal documents regarding Theatre equipment and infrastructure 

Ensure compliance with health and safety standards 


Client Services – AV Support :

Act as technical liaison with Client Services event coordinators and external vendors to provide technical guidance and AV support for meetings, conferences and events 

Set up, test, and operate AV equipment including projectors, microphones, speakers, lighting systems, video conferencing equipment, and digital displays. 

Schedule on-site technical support during conferences and events to ensure seamless AV operation. 

Maintain and inventory AV equipment, ensuring all devices are in proper working condition. 

Keep up to date with the latest AV technologies and industry best practices. 

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum 5 years of technical theatre experience

Knowledge of theatre production, sound, lighting, video, and staging

Excellent customer service skills and the ability to maintain good relations and communicate clearly with all staff, patrons, clients, artists, tour managers, and agents 

Strong understanding of IATSE Union rules and agreements

Ability to manage a budget and understand financial statements 

Leadership abilities to manage and motivate staff 

Comfortable working both as part of a team and alone

Strong attention to detail 

Creative problem-solving skills to deal with issues that may relate to HR, finance, or production 

The ability to work well under pressure, with competing priorities, in a fast-paced environment 

Proficiency with AV equipment, including sound systems, video conferencing platforms, and presentation technology 

Ability to lift and carry equipment as needed 

Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required based on event schedules 

Some remote / hybrid work
