Job Description / Duties

Job Title:  Second, Wardrobe
Reporting to: Wardrobe Manager & Lead, Wardrobe
Location: Calgary, AB
Type of Position: Term Contract (August - May)

Purpose:
Reporting to and the Wardrobe Manager & Lead Wardrobe, the incumbent is responsible for the management of the Ballet's wardrobe when delivering performances locally and on tour. The incumbent ensures good relationships with a variety of interest groups, including casual labour, IATSE locals and personnel, the performing arts industry, and the community at large. The Second Wardrobe will assist the Lead, Wardrobe with the day-to-day management of the performance wardrobe including prep, fittings, alterations, and the backstage running of the show while on tour.

Key Responsibilities

Wardrobe Prep:

Unpacking rented wardrobe.
organizing the racks in the shop alphabetically by dancer, by gender.
Pulling the appropriate costumes and accessories for fittings by consulting the casting, dancer measurements and the measurements of the costumes.
Making sure all costume pieces are labeled properly following the fitting (cloth label for costumes, tape label for accessories, hats etc.)
Distribute accessories into accessory flats as per casting. Label the accessories flats and provide a list of contents.
Complete alterations as notated during fittings.
Double check that all alterations and labels have been done. Check for pins and tags, just to be sure.
Steam all garments in preparation for the studio dress rehearsal (there will be media present).
The general organization of the show’s costumes and accessories including all jazz shoes and jazz boots.
Double check casting and keep track of who shares costumes. Casting changes on a regular basis.
Assist with and generate paperwork when requested.
Studio Dress: Responsible for setting up Studio B with the Wardrobe Manager and Lead, Wardrobe. During the studio dress rehearsal, you would assist the dancers and take notes of possible quick changes or costume notes and alterations.
Sort and complete laundry following the studio dress.
All paperwork you generate shall be stored on SharePoint in an editable electronic copy.

Loading/Strike:

Pack the wardrobe and supplies into wardrobe crates on loading day. These crates will be shipped to the theatre.
When the wardrobe returns to the studios, the Second Wardrobe will assist in the unpacking, sorting, laundering, drycleaning and return of the wardrobe to either it’s origin (when rented) or the Alberta Ballet warehouse.
Upon completion of all cleaning of the costume pieces, the Second Wardrobe will ensure all alterations made to rented pieces are reversed prior to packing for shipment.

On Tour Wardrobe Management:

At the theatre you and the Lead, Wardrobe will be responsible for directing the local dressers on how to set up the dressing rooms, prep the wardrobe, do laundry, and dress the show. You are primarily responsible for the men and their wardrobe. The Lead, Wardrobe is responsible for the women and their wardrobe.
The Second Wardrobe is responsible for keeping track of the touring wardrobe supplies and will notify the Lead, Wardrobe when supplies are running short.
The Second Wardrobe along with the Lead, Wardrobe will lead by example and have a hands-on approach to managing the show once on tour. This creates a team-oriented environment between the Alberta Ballet staff and the union locals working on the show.
Should any major casting changes happen on tour that require additional fittings, the Second Wardrobe will notify and consult with the Lead, Wardrobe regarding the fittings and alterations.
If at any point a change is requested that affects the overall design or function (including requests from the artistic director, choreographer, designer, dancers, etc.) of the costume, the Second Wardrobe will notify and consult with the Lead, Wardrobe to find a solution.
Should there be a need for any crew or scheduling changes while on tour, please notify the Lead, Wardrobe who will consult with the Technical Director.

Administration:

Assist with the general organization of information contained within the wardrobe department.
Ensure proper filing and maintenance of l digital and hard copy files. Digital archives are preferred over hard copy.
Assist in the maintenance of the company wardrobe inventory at the company studios, warehouse location and in the venue.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:

Sound interpersonal, team building skills, and a positive attitude.
Strong leadership skills.
2 years minimum in costume construction, that may include but not limited to theatre and film production.
A post-secondary education in wardrobe construction is of benefit, but not required.
Strong understanding of the wardrobe build process.
Strong sewing skills and the ability to perform complex alterations.
Must have good working knowledge of Office365 applications.
Must be a full member of IATSE 212 or have sister status with IATSE 212 if from an outside local. Must be Pink Card eligible.

Working Conditions / physical requirements:

The schedule for prep in the studio is Monday to Friday 9:00am to 5:30pm and is outlined in the production schedule for days of work required.
The Second Wardrobe will be required to travel with the company primarily between September and May (including December, no exceptions) or as outlined in the production schedule.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and speak and hear. The employee must lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Must be prepared to use his or her own personal vehicle for occasional company business and will be reimbursed for such use on a per kilometer basis.
A demonstrable ability to handle a deadline oriented, fast paced environment.
The Second Wardrobe is expected to be punctual, personable, and work well with others. This position requires strong organizational, leadership and problem-solving skills and a self-motivated attitude towards the work.
Primarily (but not limited to) working at the Alberta Ballet studio and warehouse for prep and the Southern and Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditoriums during performance weeks.

Key Relationships:

Ensure working relationships with the Rehearsal Director, Artistic Director, Production Department, Stage Management, Wardrobe as well as with representatives of the Alberta Ballet School.
Ensure working collaboration with Alberta Ballet administrative staff.
Foster good relations and communication with a variety of interest groups, these include suppliers, IATSE locals, the performing arts industry, and the community at large.
Act always in the best interest of Alberta Ballet in promoting its artistic objectives.

The position of Second Wardrobe is subject to the rates, terms and conditions as outlined in the IATSE White Contract and IATSE Canadian Pink Contract. This position is included as Alberta Ballet Regular Crew. The Second Wardrobe position is subject to all Alberta Ballet company policies and procedures. All overtime must be pre-approved by the Wardrobe Manager and must be provided in writing.
