Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Production Supervisors, the Venue Technician takes care of all the technological needs for live performances by setting up, working with, and taking care of the necessary lighting, sound, video, staging, equipment and tools. They will work with users of the venue in the set-up, running, and take down of shows; ensure that all health and safety regulations are maintained.

Other duties include meeting with producers or performers to determine the desired lighting or sound for a performance, monitoring equipment for needed repairs and setting up and testing gear.

To be successful in this role, the Venue Technician will need to demonstrate a commitment to customer and team member care, model health and safety principles in work execution and keep audience and client experience top of mind at all times. The Venue Technician will be open to ongoing learning and skills development provided through on the job training at the PAC.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
(As they pertain to each area of expertise)

• Work with the Production Supervisors to facilitate all required lighting or sound needs of performances.

Lighting
• Work from the production advance to properly prepare, plot and hang all lighting elements and lighting connectivity required; inclusive of any required follow spots, special effects lighting, moving lighting and theatrical effects.
• Confer with producers, performers, and PAC team, in order to determine, and achieve the desired lighting for a live production or presentation.
• Program all required lighting control inclusive of moving lights and conventional lighting.
• Perform any required lighting cues.
• Perform equipment and system maintenance as directed by the Production Supervisors.
• Busk shows live with little direction to enhance performances on stage when requested.
• Perform other related duties as directed.

Audio
• Work from the production advance to properly prepare, patch, and provide all audio connectivity required. This is inclusive of any stage requirements such as mics, electrical drops, risers, steps or any show related items.
• Confer with producers, performers, and PAC team, in order to determine, and achieve the desired sound for a live production or presentation.
• Perform any required audio cues.
• Play any show related playback as require.
• Regulate volume level and sound quality during live performance or presentations, using control consoles.
• Load and operated from QLab as required.
• Mix shows live as applicable with little or no direction to properly showcase artist talent and enhance audience experience when requested.
• Perform equipment and system maintenance as directed by the Production Supervisors.
• Perform other related duties as directed.

Other
• Set up and focusing of projectors.
• Set up and strike all stage equipment as required ie. Risers, backline, chairs.
• Assist with load and load out.
• Operation of in house PTZ camera system.
• Perform Stage hand duties as required when necessary.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• A College Diploma in Technical Theatre or equivalent, or five years directly related experience.
• Must posses a valid working at heights certificate and an elevated work platform certificate.

Lighting
• Working knowledge of the ETC series of consoles inclusive of dimming and connectivity.
• Working knowledge of conventional, moving light, and LED lighting elements.
• Working knowledge of proper lighting technique across different musical and theatrical platforms inclusive of orchestral presentation.
• Ability to read and interpret a standard lighting plot and facilitate the hang and programming of the plot.
• Working knowledge of Q-Lab programming and operating.
• Proven ability to work with different artists needs at the highest level of customer service.
• Experience in creating and maintaining a safe working environment.
• Professional, proven customer service skills with demonstrated interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
• The ability to work in a team environment, liaise with key external and internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization and the public.

Audio
• Working knowledge of the Avid series of consoles.
• Ability to operate in an analog capacity as required.
• Working knowledge of proper mic technique across different musical platforms inclusive of orchestral presentation.
• Set and patch a stage according to provided stage plot and input lists.
• Experience working with QLab and recording.
• Proven ability to work with different artists needs at the highest level of customer service.
• Experience in creating and maintaining a safe working environment.
• Professional, proven customer service skills with demonstrated interpersonal, organizational and communication skills
• The ability to work in a team environment, liaise with key external and internal stakeholders at all levels of the organization and the public.

• Availability and willingness to work evenings, weekends, holidays and long calls, as required.

Salary: $30.02 / hour - 1400 hour guarantee Sept - June

Opening our doors in 2015, the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre (the PAC) is a 95,000 square foot arts and culture hub located in downtown St. Catharines, Ontario, serving the Niagara region. The centre features 4 separate venues under one roof as well as an outdoor performance space, and is supported by a team of 25 full-time, and 40 part-time staff and over 100 volunteers. Events showcase music, dance, theatre, film, comedy, speakers, meetings and community gatherings, ranging from 200-800-person capacity. Built as part of a downtown revitalization and cultural renaissance plan, the PAC has become a home to local arts groups and organizations throughout the Niagara region. The PAC is also in a rich, long-term programmatic and operating partnership with Brock University.

The PAC provides a platform to share the artist’s unique voice, showcasing diverse stories, history and lived experiences.
