Job Description / Duties

Commencing August 2022, we are seeking a Theatre Technician who will support and work closely with the Manager of Theatre & Presentation Services, teachers and school staff in the professional mounting of performances, presentations and events that require technical support.

You will be required to work a flexible schedule, which includes day shifts or may require working evenings and weekends. Job occasionally involves extended work periods, usually concentrated around scheduled events.

In working collaboratively with the Manager, the Technician will:
• create the theatrical elements for school productions and events (including lighting, audio, video, projection, special effects, set construction);
• set up and tear down audio visual, lighting and stage components required for school events around campus;
• record and broadcast school events and campus presentations;
• maintain production safe and efficient production facilities (including the theatre workshop, the stage booth, the theatre, the dance studio, props and costume storage);
• monitor and ensure an operationally sound facility for day-to-day operations and for users of the school’s Mandeville Theatre;
• educate and encourage users in the safe operation and respect of Theatre facilities and equipment;
• maintain safe work practices for all theatre crews (both volunteers, students and staff);
• provide technical support for all school events and to licensees of the theatre;
• assist and maintain stage and production equipment, ordering any repairs or replacement of equipment in keeping with production budgets; and
• keep abreast of operating system updates, pertinent software trends, and assess their impact on technical equipment.

Qualifications / Required Skills

• A minimum of a College diploma in Theatre Production or equivalent work experience.
• Work experience in lighting, sound and set design is an asset.
• Certification, compliance and knowledge/training in Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and standards and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information Systems (WHMIS).
• Thorough knowledge of theatrical staging materials and techniques, specifically, knowledge of basic structural integrity requirements as it pertains to materials commonly used in the industry, including assembly of stages and sets.
• Knowledge of theatrical codes and standards.
• Working knowledge of QLAB, current video projection, lighting and sound projection technologies.
• Ability to safely operate power tools, saws, and hand tools.
• Ability to operate sound and manual and computer-assisted light control panels, computers and other theatre related equipment.
• Working knowledge of audio and video editing during broadcast and during post-production.
• Strong understanding of occupational hazards and standard safety practices and procedures.
• Ability to work creatively with limited physical space, challenging schedules, and tight design delivery times.
• Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines.
