Job Description / Duties

The Opportunity

The Theatre Practitioner, Assistant Head Stage Carpenter provides the operational support required for the delivery of Performing Arts Programs and activities. The Assistant Head Stage Carpenter supports the aims and objectives of Performing Arts by taking responsibility for the safe, efficient and precise departmental production requirements of all assigned events and activities which fall under the jurisdiction of Performing Arts department. The Theatre Practitioner. Assistant Head Stage Carpenter will assist their direct supervisor in supporting specific production training programs regarding the above.

Roles and Responsibilities
Reporting to the Technical Director, below are some key accountabilities:

- Accountable for providing support, services and tasks, or performing analytical, technical, administrative work, involving different and unrelated processes, materials and methods; making decisions within delegated limits and making recommendations which lead to actions taken by others.
- Assist in the administration of the department, including supervision of assigned crews, with attention to safety procedures and within the supplied frameworks of budget, staffing, equipment, space and time.
- Direct the work activities of up to 6 department staff depending on the jobs or tasks.
- Support the integration of department-wide activities; and may be called to support coordination of a highly specialized activity.
- Communicate or negotiate effectively in formal group situations in order to influence or motivate employees, resident guests, clients, artists, participants or groups of people who may have different goals and/or may be uncooperative.
- On occasion the incumbent may be required provide supervision to casual labour staff.
- Assist department staff or new employees by showing them work routines and procedures.
- Work towards broad production objectives and Banff Centre policies in a fairly complex and frequently changing set of circumstances covering several areas of one division.
- Develop ideas which result in significant changes to existing production procedures, practices, standards, specifications, services or projects within department or which cross departmental lines.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

- Minimum of 8 years experience working as a Stage Carpenter within a Theatre or Performing Arts production environment.
- A formal theatre education
- Proficient in the use of computers, multimedia and be able to operate specialized equipment.
- Working knowledge of the theories and practices that support this discipline.
- Knowledgeable of related industry trends including the application of up-to-date techniques, use of special materials and current health and safety standards.

Special Requirements

- Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

Additional Information

Employment Terms and Benefits

- In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
- This is an 8 week, termed position.
- This position pays $32 per hour based on working 40 hours per week.
