Job Description / Duties

The Darke Hall Society in Regina, SK is seeking a Technical Director (TD) to lead all elements of production at the newly refurbished historic performance venue, Darke Hall.

The Technical Director is responsible for managing all technical aspects of production and performance for events occurring at Darke Hall. This includes lighting, sound and projection, operation of consoles, rigging, carpentry and overall support for incoming artists. This position is responsible for creating and maintaining technical information and drawings for the venue and liaising with artists and renters about their technical requirements before and during the event. This position will also be required to train and supervise casual technicians hired for events.

The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys working with people, has strong leadership skills, appreciates the challenge of working with a variety of artists and renters, and is passionate about the arts.

Duties and Responsibilities:
• Create and maintain technical information about the venue, to be provided to incoming artists and renters.
• Liaise with incoming artists and renters to ascertain and fulfill the technical requirements of all shows.
• Provide excellent customer service to renters and artists.
• Coordinate safe and feasible solutions for the installation, rigging, and deployment of any set elements for incoming events.
• Coordinate and lead all pre-production work in the theatre for incoming events.
• Develop basic lighting designs for incoming artists and renters who do not provide their own designs.
• Supervise, train, schedule and guide the work of casual technicians hired for events, as appropriate.
• Responsible for ensuring that all staff are appropriately trained and that regulatory requirements are adhered to by developing safety programs, providing orientation to staff in the proper and safe use of tools and equipment in the venue, and establishing and enforcing safety standards in the venue.
• Ensure safety of artists, renters, and theatre equipment pre-event and post-event, including load-in and load out, by leading safety walk-throughs and discussions at the start of the artist/renter’s time in the venue, and ensuring safety standards are adhered to by all artists, renters and staff over the course of the event.
• Devise and implement a system of scheduled maintenance and routine repair of mechanical, electrical, stage lighting equipment.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:
• Demonstrated experience in professional technical theatre, whether through post-secondary formal training in technical theatre, or experience working with a professional theatre company or in live event production.
• Experience working with lighting, sound and projection elements including Soundcraft and Ion consoles (or comparable consoles), and rigging systems.
• Ability to operate, test, evaluate, service, repair, install and/or modify the wide range of equipment used in the venue.
• Strong interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with staff, the general public, external consultants, contractors, and vendors.
• Ability to effectively train and supervise others in technical procedures, techniques, and job-related skills.
• Ability to organize multiple tasks and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to foster a cooperative and respectful work environment.
• Ability to work under minimal supervision.
• Ability to develop and maintain recordkeeping systems and procedures.
• Ability to understand and comply with Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, and all safe work procedures and practices applicable to the position.

Additional Information

Position Details:
• The Technical Director is a full-time position with a high amount of flexibility in work hours including some evenings, weekends and longer days.
• The salary range is commensurate to experience and is between $50,000 - $60,000 per year plus benefits.
• The successful candidate will ideally start on January 4, 2022 (with some flexibility).
• New hires are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to the start of employment and will be required to provide proof of vaccination.
