Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Manager, the Technical Director is responsible for the provision of audio & lighting support for the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre, including the overall operation and maintenance of the sound and lighting system (inventory, maintenance recommendations, and equipment status) and the scheduling of technicians and staff for events/productions that take place at the theatre. The Technical Director is expected to be available for all booked performances.

Some of the tasks below may be delegated to volunteers, where appropriate and as resources permit. However, the Technical Director is ultimately responsible for ensuring that the tasks are properly carried out.

Technical Responsibilities
• Work with Manager, other Technicians, user groups, and performers to ensure performances run smoothly;
• Offer interested volunteers training in the use of sound and lighting equipment;
• Supervise the technical crew during events and shows;
• Assemble all the lighting and filter equipment needed;
• Pre-rig the lighting and sound equipment while ensuring that all cables and wires are safely concealed;
• Operate sound and lighting consoles;
• Supervise the focusing of lighting at rehearsals;
• De-rig all equipment at the end of a production, ensure it is safely and properly stored;

Equipment
• Monitor equipment for superior performance and maintain equipment according to manufacturer recommendations;
• Make recommendations to the manager for equipment maintenance;
• Keep abreast of appropriate equipment and lighting codes and make recommendations to the manager to ensure highest standard is achieved;
• Assist with inventory and make recommendations to the manager for the enhancement of sound and lighting equipment;
• Ability to monitor and keep up on minor maintenance around the building will be considered an asset

Technical Support
• Provide technical support to any and all users of the Arts Centre according to event specifications;
• Respond to audio/lighting support requests;
• Provide technical opinion/support to any off-site equipment events/rentals;
• Troubleshoot software and hardware problems related to sound and lighting equipment;
• Install software, set up new computers and other hardware related to sound and lighting equipment;

Qualifications / Required Skills

Education:
• Diploma or Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in sound/lighting, theatre arts, or equivalent knowledge

Experience:
• Experience with audio and lighting equipment, software, hardware, etc.
• Hands-on experience in lighting, audio, stage design/construction, and any other related field knowledge;
• Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment;
• Willingness to work and train youth and volunteers in various aspects of stage lighting or sound engineering is considered an asset.

Skills:
• Ability to maintain flexible work schedule to accommodate performances and user groups of the Theatre;
• Ability to work in high-pressure situations and handle multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining a professional and appropriate demeanor;
• Ability to prioritize tasks and to carry out responsibilities with little supervision;
• Ability to work well with people;
• Strong communication skills with special emphasis on the ability to work with volunteer interested in sound and lighting
• Knowledge of the ELAA and its goals and objectives

Additional Information

Conditions:
• Must undergo a Vulnerable Sector Check
• Valid First Aid and CPR certification considered an asset
• Willingness to work at heights and become certified to operate a lift

Salary: $45,000 to $53,000 annually (depending on education and experience).
• Benefits include a sign-on bonus paid at the end of the probationary period, Time off in Lieu flexibility, two weeks vacation, a comprehensive health benefits package, in-service and professional development opportunities.
• Some financial assistance with moving expenses may be available for out-of-town applicants.
