Job Description / Duties

JOB DESCRIPTION
The Technical Director (TD) has the daily responsibility for the technical operations of the ArtSpring theatre, including lighting, sound, carrying out/coordinating maintenance and repair, and other duties as required.

ArtSpring also looks to the TD to anticipate, analyze, and evaluate the need for technical support for various events and performances as well as plan, develop, schedule and provide those supports.

The TD reports directly to the Executive/Artistic Director. The position requires working with a great deal of independence and exercising independent judgment in performing a wide variety of duties. Because of the operating hours of this facility, close supervision is not normally required nor expected. The TD is expected to work collegially and in a supportive manner with other members of staff, visiting artists, volunteers, and clients, as well as work with and train other crew and volunteers as needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Operates, maintains, and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment, and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
• Determines the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, audio-visual support and special needs necessary for events and performances presented at the facility in advance of production dates.
• Designs, sets up, maintains, and operates lighting, sound, and audio visual systems for theatre, dance, music, and other productions and projects; assists guest designers and artists with technical matters.
• Advises production managers and lighting and sound designers on the technical specifications, costs, and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show and supervises the implementations of approved technical designs.
• Supervises and assists with set and stage load-in, assembly, and management.
• Designs and constructs sets when needed; designs lighting and sound systems appropriate to each performance, and oversees stage crews and volunteers.
• Performs minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment; maintains inventory of necessary supplies.
• Assists in recruiting, training, and assignment of volunteer or paid technical staff for individual shows.
• Orients facility renters and visiting productions to safety protocols, technical characteristics, and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by those engaged by or renting the facility.
• Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranges for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; maintains inventory and orders specialized supplies.
• Collaborates with the ArtSpring rental coordinator to establish production budgets for rentals and to prepare reports of actual charges post-event.
• Makes recommendations to the Executive/Artistic Director regarding capital purchases of technical equipment.

Qualifications / Required Skills

QUALIFICATIONS
• Minimum 5 years experience in technical theatre positions.
• Education in theatre, lighting, and audio practices at Bachelor of Arts or College Diploma level (preferred, but equivalent experience will be considered.)
• Demonstrated competence with theatre technology including digital audio consoles and lighting consoles. Video and computer proficiency.
• A working knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures of theatre, dance, and music productions and presentations including stage, set, sound and lighting design and implementation; stage management; computerized lighting systems; stage carpentry; appropriate safety precautions and procedures.
• Effective oral and written communications skills in English.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with representatives of various groups, vendors, co-workers, and others. All members of staff are required to be professional, co-operative, and flexible in line with the needs of the organization.
• Maintain sometimes irregular and extended working hours to accommodate performance dates and times (i.e. evenings/weekends)
• Be able to lift, push, or pull objects up to 100 pounds using appropriate tools, as well as be comfortable and safe scaling ladders.
