Job Description / Duties

The Technical Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the schedule of all events in the Joseph Strug Concert Hall, Sir James Dunn Theatre and David Mack. Murray Studio (apart from DalTheatre and DalOpera performances). The Technical Coordinator will oversee all technical preparations for each event by determining the equipment and support personnel needs. He/she/they will manage scheduling of rentals considering academic classes and events and in coordination with Fountain School admin staff, Assoc. Director Productions, Production Director, and Front-Of-House Manager.

The Technical Coordinator duties and assignments include, but are not limited to:

- Interpret information from faculty, staff, clients, artists, artist’s management, and technicians for orderly set up and running of all events in applicable spaces.
- Consult with and advise producers, designers, and technicians re efficient setup, running and teardown of events, or assist with other technical aspects as required i.e., loading/unloading of scenery, props, music instruments and other items).
- Review contracts/riders to determine all production requirements are appropriate for the venues.
- Provide appropriate information such as technical drawings and inventories to assist the client in pre-planning their event.
- Supervise general cabling, focusing of lights and related rigging and staging for all shows.
- Operate the lighting console during shows and rehearsals.
- Schedule crew calls, rehearsals, focus lighting, sound checks and set ups.
- Interview, hire, train and supervise part-time technical crew in the safe execution of their duties pertaining to events, which may include the unloading of scenery, props, etc., running of cables, focusing lights, setting up rigging and staging, and running sound or light boards.
- Hire and supervise Front-Of-House management in consultation with the Admin Officer, Finance & Personnel.
- Always maintain a safe working environment by ensuring safety training is up to date and conforming to all established safety policies and procedures.
- Assist with facilities management issues as required.

Qualifications / Required Skills

The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive background in technical production including technical direction, sound, stage management and lighting design, as well as an understanding of all aspects of venue operations, including:

- Excellent communication, customer service, client interaction, supervisory and administrative skills,
- Completion of a theatre-related technical program (university undergraduate degree preferred) or equivalent professional experience in technical production of dance, live music, theatre, and other performing arts (technical direction, sound design, lighting design, stage management).
- At least ten years of experience in professional theatre world, including specialized experience in lighting design application, background in theatrical lighting equipment/related products. Previous experience as ‘in-house’ technician or equivalent considered an asset.
- Knowledge of multiple controlled chain motors, audio/video systems and digital projection and current Theatre safety practices.
- Ability to work well under pressure and within tight deadlines.
- Patience, creativity, flexibility, problem-solving.
- Computer proficiency (MS Office; VectorWorks, Qlab, Adobe Creative Suite)
