Job Description / Duties

Who are we looking for?

The Stitcher is a permanent, part-time position. This role will work under the Head of Wardrobe and will be tasked primarily with the altering of existing and assembling of new costumes for the Arts Club Theatre Company. This is a unionized position under the Arts Club Theatre Company/I.A.T.S.E. 118 Collective agreement.
The successful candidate will have good judgement, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively and clearly communicate and coordinate with the various artists and staff, and sometimes vendors and contractors. Knowledge of costume shop operations, previous experience as a Stitcher, with strong aptitude to manage deadlines and budgets, and work in a dynamic environment, are essential. Applicants with experience as a Cutter will be given preference.

The work requires good manual dexterity, some lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and frequent standing, bending, walking, kneeling, and stooping. There are periods of repetitive motion of the hands and wrists. The working environment is inside the costume shop or backstage and in the dressing rooms of the theater. The role works with a variety of chemicals, including soaps, cleaning fluids, solvents, dyes, and other backstage work requires the ability to work in dim light. Work is occasionally required evenings and on weekends.

Qualifications / Required Skills

What are the required skills and qualifications?

• Ability to operate a variety of sewing machines including industrial single needle, zig zag, serger, and/or other domestic machines
• Demonstrated experience in machine & hand sewing techniques
• Extensive knowledge of sewing and construction terms and techniques, and an ability to understand and take instructions from the cutters and head of wardrobe regarding the methods of construction
• Communicate with other team members concerning problems and possible solutions; Assist in other areas of the shop as directed by the Head of Wardrobe.
• Some demonstrated experience and knowledge with pattern drafting and cutting
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines
• Strong written and verbal communication skills

What are the Mandatory requirements?

• Minimum of two years of experience in the construction of theatrical costumes
• Basic math skills

Where will preference be given?

• Preference will be given to candidates who are members of IATSE local 118.
• Candidates with experience working with Windows and Apple computer operating systems and computer networking.
• Candidates with a diploma/degree in costume/fashion construction

Additional Information

What are the conditions and remuneration?

• Work is based on a permanent part-time 40 hour work week
• Overtime hours worked can be banked and paid out at the employees discretion
• Work will be daytime primarily.
• Primarily you will work at the BMO Theatre Centre
• Hourly rate is set by IATSE Collective Agreement (Sept 21-22: $26.04/hr)
• Option to be included in IATSE RRSP Matching Program
• Comprehensive Benefits Package through IATSE Local 118
• Vacation days and PTO for illness and emergency as defined by the ACTC/IATSE CBA.

Salary: $26.04/hr
