Job Description / Duties

Who are we looking for?

The Stanley Head Electrician is a permanent full-time position and a key member of our production install, running crew, and strike teams. The Stanley Head Electrician ensures the safe and smooth operation of all lighting installs and strikes. They are in charge of all lighting elements of the production from pre-production throughout strike and reset. They have excellent communication skills and are experienced in leading install and strike crews. They are a team player and self motivated individual who works well with and without supervision. The Stanley Head Electrician takes ownership of the venue’s lighting systems and inventory and leads the way in identifying needs for maintenance of the venue and/or equipment. They possess excellent organizational and time management skills, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude in stressful situations. Must be flexible and inclusive in outlook and approach to the position and be diplomatic in dealing with crews, cast, stage managers and all other staff.

This is a unionized position under the Arts Club Theatre Company/I.A.T.S.E. 118 Collective agreement. This position will be part of the Stanley season’s running crew, working on each performance. The position reports to the Technical Director.

We are looking for a creative, out-going, and enthusiastic person who has a passion for theatre. The successful applicant will have a broad knowledge in all aspects of theatrical lighting with a keen interest and understanding of sound and video for theatre. They will have a generous and warm personality making the cast feel comfortable and safe as they manage the control booth for each performance. The Stanley Head Electrician will have a capacity for leadership and teamwork as they coordinate the lighting for often times large and dazzling theatrical productions.

What is the job?

• Perform the role of Stanley Head Electrician on show running crew.
• Supervise, monitor and assist with all aspects of pre-production as it relates to electrics/sound/video.
• Assist Lighting, Sound and Projection Designers with respective designs and requirements.
• Assist with build of practicals and special effects.
• Operate show Lighting control and up to one more additional show control system (sound or video) for Arts Club productions and/or rentals in accordance with article 23.2(a) of the ACTC/IATSE 118 CBA
• Supervision of Lx hang, focus, and levels crew as well as running crew.
• Document and track all show-related lighting configurations.
• Give regular feedback on status of work as well as estimate assigned work.
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of facilities, tools and equipment.
• Advise and assist with on-going lighting inventory maintenance, and repair.
• Assist with organization and purchasing of all lx consumables.
• Advise and assist on theatre rentals when required.
• Assist with occupational safety and health of workers.
• Produce and distribute Technical Reports.

Qualifications / Required Skills

What are the required skills and qualifications?

• Proficient in programming and operation of computer lighting boards (ETC ION) and all components of the lighting system.
• Able to read and understand Lighting Designer plots and associated paperwork.
• Proficient with networking, troubleshooting, and maintaining IP-based transmission protocols for Sound, Lights and Video.
• Ability to work under tight time constraints.
• Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
• Ability to problem solve and think on your feet.
• Ability to lift heavy objects safely.
• Ability to work at heights.
• Broad knowledge in theatrical lighting procedures, problem solving, time management tools and theatre products.
• Proficient working knowledge of counter weighted fly systems and the set-up, rigging and strike of lighting equipment.
• Operation and maintenance of motorized stage equipment control systems.
• Ability to supervise Lx hang, focus, and strike crews

What are the Mandatory requirements?

• Minimum of three (3) years experience as Head Electrician working for a professional theatre company
• Experience working in a Fly House and the ability to work at heights and climb ladders
• LPEC certificate
• Able to work at heights / climb ladders
• Able to repeatedly lift, push or maneuver heavy loads, either alone or with assistance from others
• Valid Driver’s License

Where will preference be given?

• Preference will be given to candidates who are members of IATSE local 118.
• Limited Entertainment (LE) or Full Entertainment (FE) certificate is an asset.
• Experience in programming and running sound control for pre-recorded sound as well as projection (Q-Lab) will be considered an asset.
• OFA Level 1 certificate.
• Pyrotechnic and/or Firearms certificate.
• More than 3 years’ experience as a Head Electrician.
• Candidates with experience working with Windows and Apple computer operating systems and computer networking.

What are the conditions and renumeration?

• Work is based on a permanent full-time 40 hour work week
• During Installations and Tech weeks there will be work scheduled in excess of 40 hours per week
• Overtime hours worked can be banked and paid out at the employees discretion
• Work will be evenings and weekends primarily.
• Primarily you will work at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage
• Hourly rate is set by IATSE Collective Agreement (Sept 21-22: $29.19/hr)
• Option to be included in IATSE RRSP Matching Program
• Comprehensive Benefits Package through IATSE Local 118
• Vacation days and PTO for illness and emergency as defined by the ACTC/IATSE CBA.
