Job Description / Duties

This is a term position starting May 24, 2022, and ending on November 15, 2022

This position serves the visiting and resident artists in Performing Arts programs. Its primary function is to provide the expertise required for the smooth and efficient presentation of concerts and other public events, thus contributing to the artistic success of the Music & Sound programs and other programs presented by the performing Arts department. The position also serves Conference and external clients, as required.

Roles and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Technical Director, Performing Arts, below are some key accountabilities:

• Assist in the preparation and distribution of rehearsal schedules, including lighting, sound and staging requirements in conjunction with the program coordinator, Music & Sound. Schedules will be distributed to piano technicians, audio staff and work studies, front of house and box office personnel, and posted in a central location for musicians. Help to ensure that all equipment, including extra equipment, is available and in top working order.
• Liaise with performers to determine their performance needs and provide staging.
• Liaise with artistic personnel and with Audience Services to determine house set-up needs for each concert.
• Ensure efficient running of rehearsals.
• Prior to concert, ensure that musicians are present and ready, that necessary equipment and staging requirements are ready, that house is prepared to open and that lighting and audio cues have been checked.
• During the concert, ensure efficient running of program and call any necessary lighting and audio cues. Be prepared to manage all aspects of concert operation as required (including emergency procedures, etc).
• After the concert, clear stage of all chairs, cables, music scores etc. and prepare the concert report, indicating audience numbers and reporting on any special events.

Facility-related:

• Ensure studios and huts are in working order, including all chairs, stands, humidifiers and studio furniture.
• In conjunction with the production manager, monitor the condition of Music & Sound facilities and equipment, including the chamber music stage and audience chairs, Rolston Hall risers and audience chairs, diffusers, etc., and recommend both capital acquisition and maintenance requirements for Music and Sound.
• At the beginning and end of each major program, project or conference,
• restore the studios and huts to their “neutral” set-up, and ensure that the inventory of chairs, stands, and studio furniture is in working order.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications and Educational Requirements

• A keen interest in music. A background in chamber music or Jazz is an asset.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills in order to interact with technical staff (audio, production, piano technicians), and artistic staff, faculty and participants.
• Flexibility, and the ability to multi-task and to make prompt decisions
• Tact in dealing with directors, faculty and participant performers working under pressure
• The ability to remain calm under stress and meet strict deadlines
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills,
• Good IT skills, for creating lists and schedules
• Knowledge of Banff Centre health and safety procedures.

Special Requirements
• Due to the nature of the job, this position requires the candidate to be available to work a flexible, irregular schedule and weekends.

Additional Information

Employment Terms and Benefits
• In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, hourly support staff position, subject to a 500 hour probationary period.
• This position pays $21.21 per hour working up to 40 hours per week on a regular schedule.
