Job Description / Duties

This position manages and maintains the School for the Contemporary Arts wood shop, facilitating access for faculty and students, and providing expertise and mentoring to projects and productions of the SCA. Applications received by August 15 will be assessed for initial interviews. The posting will remain open until filled.

As directed by the SCA Technical Director and in consultation with Production and Design faculty, the Technician is the primary position responsible for the carpentry and costume shops, and assists in the delivery of technical services for the School's productions as produced by the undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Provides technical advice, demonstration, guidance, and assistance to faculty, sessional instructors, and students on the proper use of tools and equipment in the carpentry shops and costume shop. Maintains the facility and equipment and oversees the safe use of the various production areas in compliance with University, WorkSafeBC, and WHMIS regulations.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Qualifications:

High school graduation and two years of post-secondary education or formal certificate/diploma program equivalent in Fine Arts, Theatre Production, or a related field, with courses or formal training in all aspects of theatre production. 3 years minimum experience. An equivalent combination of formal education, certificate/program of study and experience is acceptable.

Excellent knowledge of theatrical and performance technologies, systems, and practices; with a focus on scenic construction, shop management, and safe work practices.

Excellent knowledge of Environmental Health & Safety and WorkSafe BC safety protocols and practices in addition to the safety protocols standard to the performance industry.

Good technical knowledge of costuming and props.
Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills.

Ability to successfully complete Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training.

Ability to obtain and successfully re-certify for Occupational First Aid Level 1.

Ability to use power tools, hand tools, and shop equipment.

Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance and repair (e.g. replacing blades, set-ups and alignments, lubricating and adjusting parts).
Ability to conduct training in the safe operation of power and hand tools.

Ability to operate personnel lifts, dollies, risers, platforms, decking, drapery, chain motors, pulleys, ropes, cables, and other such devices.

Ability to install scenic and display elements required for performances, exhibitions, and events.

Ability to interpret, create and edit CAD plans, plots, and schematics necessary for the communication of production requirements and to assist with training in CAD software such as Vectorworks.

Ability to use standard software applications at a basic level (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Ability to exercise mature judgement and initiative.

Ability to coordinate, train, and provide work direction to students and temporary staff/technical crew, in a fast paced environment within strict timelines.

Ability to climb and to work at heights of up to 16 feet.

Ability to work a flexible schedule including early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 25 kg.
