Job Description / Duties

Job Summary

The Department of Theatre, home of the Phoenix Theatre, is a nationally acclaimed learning institution for theatre arts with a highly regarded focus on experiential, hands-on learning through the production process. The Phoenix Theatre Building includes three fully equipped theatre spaces, support shops and modern theatre equipment. The Marketing and Communications Manager, in conjunction with professional staff and Department faculty, will provide production support to maintain and augment the experiential learning opportunities embedded in core undergraduate and graduate courses.

As the Marketing and Communications Manager, this position is responsible for all internal and external communication requirements for Theatre Department productions and events including:

evaluating and designing marketing requirements and methods for theatrical productions and providing cost and resource analysis.
acquiring appropriate advertising for Department productions and events through established industry procedures.
teaching theatrical marketing and communication skills, techniques and process in a laboratory setting.
managing the Theatre Department messaging to the community, both inside and outside of the University environment.

This position will require extended working hours, weekend and evening work, and the ability to lift and carry 20 kilograms.

Reporting to the Operations and Production Manager, the Marketing and Communications Manager is responsible for developing, designing, managing and implementing strategic marketing and communications plans for the Theatre Department, including conducting market research. The Manager will, in collaboration with members of the leadership team, develop, design and oversee web, social media, digital, print and visual content and materials for internal and external audiences, including university departments and the greater community. The Manager will use their expertise in marketing and communications to promote and publicize Theatre Department productions, operations and activities, ensuring that all communications and activities meet both UVic standards and the Theatre Department’s organizational goals. The Manager may write and/or review and edit internal documents such as manuals, process documents, forms, website content, newsletters and other publications both analogue and digital.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Job Requirements

This position requires a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Business or Marketing and Communications or a related field with at least 5 years of recent experience in a marketing and communications position in both a professional theatre and educational environment.

Experience must include:

The development and implementation of strategic marketing or communications plans
Writing, editing, graphic design and content development for a variety of mediums, including web, digital and print
Experience with the design, development and oversight of marketing and communication materials on web, social media and digital platforms

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge requirements include:

Market research and analysis
Social media platforms, strategies and techniques, including paid promotion.
Website content management and software
Design and print production techniques and software
Advertisement procurement, design and delivery requirements

Competency requirements include:

Superior writing and editing skills
A creative approach to problem solving
Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills
Strong graphic design and visual literacy skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Proven track record achieving project goals on time and produce deliverables of a high quality

This position works in a unique teaching and event-based environment and must be able and willing to work split shifts, more than 7 hours per day, and evening and weekends as required.

Assets:

Education, training and/or experience working in a post-secondary environment
History of Theatre knowledge and understanding.
Proficiency with MS365 Suite, Adobe Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Audition, Premiere), Wordpress, Mailpoet, Hootsuite, Canva and multi-media communications software.
Budget management, including estimates and expenditure tracking and reporting.

Salary: The ideal start date for this position is: July 1, 2023. The salary range for this position per the start date of July 1, 2023, is: Recruitment range: $70,137- $77,330 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement. Performance range: from starting salary, annual performance increases to max of $93,039 are available per PEA Collective Agreement, SG Schedule July 1, 2024
