Job Description / Duties

An integral role to Tarragon’s production team and community, the Head of Wardrobe will work closely with the Production Manager to support creators, and all artists, for the theatre’s productions. It is a highly skilled position within the production department. The primary focus of the position is on costume construction, purchasing, alteration and maintenance. Costumes can range from period to contemporary and cast sizes usually range from 1 to 10 per production.

You are a dedicated theatre practitioner, with an interest in supporting the artistic and production functions of the Tarragon. You enjoy working in a fast-paced, artistically engaging, and collaborative work environment.

Reporting to the Production Manager, the Head of Wardrobe is responsible for the following:
• Interpreting wardrobe designs and working with designers to create appropriate costumes for each character in all our productions
• Preparing wardrobe cost estimates from designs and presenting them to the Production Manager and Designer
• Tracking wardrobe budgets per show, and reconciling petty cash and credit card purchases
• Scheduling and coordinating wardrobe assistants as needed per production
• Coordinating any wig and makeup needs per production
• Liaising with Stage Management in order to respond to rehearsal and show notes and to schedule fittings
• Maintaining Tarragon’s wardrobe stock and facilitate wardrobe rentals
• Providing suitable and reasonable rehearsal costumes for use in the rehearsal hall
• Participating in dressing room preparation, wardrobe load-ins, set-ups, technical and dress rehearsals, photo/media calls, previews and strikes, as deemed necessary by the Production Manager
• Archiving all wardrobe materials from each production

Qualifications / Required Skills

The successful candidate will bring to the post:
• At least 3 years’ experience, or equivalent, as Head of Wardrobe at a comparable theatre or company
• Experience with costume construction and researching period costumes
• The ability to work independently
• A comfort and ability to direct the work of assistants
• Excellent communication skills and be highly organized
• The ability to work flexible hours as required
• A valid G Driver’s license is an asset

Additional Information

The position usually runs from late August to late May. For the 2021/2022 season, the position will start on or around December 20, 2021 and end on or around May 29, 2022

Salary: $800-850/week + benefits
