Job Description / Duties

The Head Carpenter supervises all technical production aspects of the Mississauga Living Arts Centre, taking responsibility for the staging requirements of production events and managing them in an efficient, safe, and precise manner. They work to achieve high production value for audiences and throughout the process with their team. The ideal candidate is committed to creating a positive working environment—an expert in respectful communication and mediation in artistic and technical discussions.

This position supervises all technical production staff and department heads, including carpenters, electrics, props, scenic charges, sound engineers, stagehands, loading crews, and other production staff. The Head Carpenter also works collaboratively with administrative staff and creative team members (i.e. stage management, designers, and directors) to achieve their artistic vision in an efficient, safe, and cost-effective manner.

Roles and Responsibilities

-Provide efficient and reliable preparation, operation, and maintenance of all stage machinery, rigging, and scenery.
-Working knowledge of a counterweight fly system.
-Administration of stage carpentry operations, including the supervision of assigned crews with attention to safety procedures while staying within established budget, staffing, equipment, space, and time limits.
-Liaise with Lighting, Projections, Scenic, and Sound teams to become aware of all respective responsibilities within shows.
-Adhere to deadlines and apply professional theatre techniques and methods to provide the quality, efficiency, and support level consistent with industry best-practices.
-Interpret technical documents and riders to determine the technical needs of shows within the performance spaces.
-Complete required show reports and distribute accordingly.
-Advance productions and answer questions pertaining to technical capabilities or usage of equipment in the theatre.
-Monitor project progress so that activity stays on budget and on time; problem solve potential challenges associated with program and show support and bring these thoughts to Management.
-Manage departmental administration tasks (i.e. crew timesheets)

Health and Safety

-Comply with regional/provincial/federal health and safety policies and the health and safety policies of the specific theatre.
-Act as the guardian of safety for all performers, faculty, staff, and all other personnel working or engaging in activities in the performance venue spaces.
-Conduct walk-throughs and give safety chats for artists and staff on their first day onstage.
-Train junior staff in the correct and safe operation of all performing arts staging, rigging and shop equipment as required.
-Advise and collaborate with Management on a regular basis regarding the above.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Leadership experience and previous experience in a theatre environment is required, as well as an excellent working knowledge of basic carpentry tools. Training will also be provided.

Additional Information

Working Conditions

· All shifts are paid out at a 4-hour minimum
· Position will be part of a running house crew and expected to schedule themselves around the venue events
· Scheduling days off must be done at a minimum of two weeks prior to an event date
· Position is paid hourly; however, a candidate can expect to earn between 55K and 65K annually
· Position is paid daily overtime after 8 regular hours are worked on the same event on the same day
· Position is paid weekly overtime after 44 regular hours are accrued in one business week, Monday to Sunday
· Position is paid 4% vacation pay in addition to regular wages
· Position is paid every two weeks
· Position is paid in accordance with all Provincial and Federal employment standards
· Health benefits will be available after 3 months of employment

Hours & Scheduling

The position will require an individual to be available for full-time hours during the busy seasons at The Living Arts Centre, which are generally from October - November, and then from March - June.

Salary: $55,000 - 65,000 annually
