Job Description / Duties

Reporting to the Production Manager / Technical Director, the Assistant Technical Director is a hands-on position overseeing crew scheduling, theatrical upkeep, and the technical and production needs for the two venues in the Kay Meek Arts Centre (KMC). The Assistant Technical Director will strive to build positive and professional relationships with staff and clients of the center. Type of events include shows that are a) Presented and Produced by the KMC, b) Shows and Events for our Rental Clients and c) Shows and Events with the staff and students of School District 45. On top of the Assistant Technical Director duties, it is essential that the successful candidate be an experienced technician capable of directing youth to execute school district events.

Responsibilities:
• Performs with positive professional conduct acting as a point of contact with artists, staff, and clients
• Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theatre, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment and the maintenance of stage facilities
• In conjunction with the Technical Director – maintain and oversee the technical and production schedules in all spaces.
• For KMC produced shows, act as Assistant Technical Director ensuring a high level of support to the shows.
• Act as Technician / Operator for a portion of the presentations throughout the season.
• Responsible for training, and scheduling of technical staff, in conjunction with the Technical Director.
• Conducts orientation and training to facility renters, students and volunteers in safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations.
• Provides training for staff and volunteers to implement the Fire/Safety plan.
• Assists working with SD 45 Students teaching them the basics of stagecraft and supervising them during school events and presentations.
• Performs preventive maintenance and repairs/replacement as required in conjunction with the Technical Director and within budgetary constraints.
• Manage an average 40-hour work week, balancing busy periods and lighter periods of work
• Available to cover Production Manager duties during scheduled periods of leave.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Minimum Requirements / Qualifications
• 5+ years related production experience as a technician and/or technical director
• Related Post-Secondary education or commensurate experience.
• Ability to work flexible and irregular hours, including nights and weekends is required
• Knowledge of sound, lighting, rigging, stage management and staging for a wide range of performing arts disciplines including theatre, film exhibition, dance, music (of all genres), community and school presentations
• Experience in the setting and upholding safety standards in all parts of the venue – from stages, backstage, audience and FOH.
• Experience in supervising and scheduling staff
• Experience working in a team-based collaborative environment with a positive attitude to deliver the highest quality presentations. Proven ability to work with diplomacy and tact with a wide range of stakeholders.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
• Experience working with a range of clients, from professional artists, community partners and youth. Experience teaching youth considered a strong asset.
• Ability to work in a fast paced, multi-tasking environment with a small staff.
• Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail
• Proficiency in computer use including Excel, event management software programs, QLab, ETC Eos, and other event-based computer programs. Basic proficiency in computer assisted drafting using Vector Works.
• Ability to work independently with a strict adherence to deadlines.
• Mature personal judgment, exhibiting a high level of professionalism and diplomacy

Salary: Salary Range $55000-60000 based on experience, plus group benefits package, paid bi-weekly, Average 40 hours / week
