Job Description / Duties

Job Description Summary

1: Supervising the operation of the Lighting Department of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts during set-ups and performances. (approximately 60%)

2: Supervising the operation of the Stage Department of the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts during set-ups and performances. (approximately 40%)

3: During evening/weekend events or performances may be responsible for the management of the facility.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Associate Managing Director of Facilities and Operations

Work Performed

1: Assists in training, overseeing and scheduling staff. Supervision of stage technicians as required.

2: Ensures that client requirements are met in a timely manner.

3: Works within the schedule as provided.

4: Resolves client problems related to stage and backstage areas with direction from the Associate Managing Director of Facilities and Operations.

5: Ensures effective implementation of new and previously arranged production services to clients for their performances and related activities at the Chan Centre.

These services should follow within the guidelines provided in the Chan Centre Production Policy and Procedures.

6: Recommends policies and procedures to the Associate Managing Director of Facilities and Operations.

7: In conjunction with the Ticket, Bar and Front of House Coordinators, ensures the performances and events run smoothly.

8: Oversees and ensures that the negotiated client production requirements are met for each performance event.

9: Represents Chan Centre to the general public, clients, and Artist s representatives. This includes, as required, the staff and students of Theatre, Film and Creative Writing Departments, Ceremonies Office, and the UBC School of Music.

10: Ensures security of the building and safety of the performers, staff and patrons.

11: Reports deficiencies of building amenities to Associate Managing Director of Facilities and Operations.

12: Compiles performance and event reports and forwards to appropriate staff.

13: Acts as the primary lighting technician on some events.

14: Acts as the primary stage technician on some events

15: Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors could have a serious impact on relations with clients and patrons. Poor customer service could negatively impact these relations as well as patron safety and the Chan Centre s financial viability. It is expected that clients be treated in a courteous and cheerful manner at all times.

Supervision Received

Works under the direction of the Associate Managing Director of Facilities and Operations

Supervision Given

Responsible for motivating and leading the casual stage and production staff.

Qualifications / Required Skills

Preferred Qualifications

Diploma in a related field of arts production or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Minimum five years of experience in various production related facets of the performing arts demonstrating a progression in responsibilities. Specific skills in Stage Rigging, Stage Lighting and Stage Management are required. Specific skills in Stage/Music Audio are preferred but not required Computer experience required.Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Additional Information

This is an on-call, casual position. You'll be working with the Head of Lighting on some calls, or working as the Acting Head of Lighting / console operator on other calls.

Salary: $31.97/hr
