Job Description / Duties

1) Facility and Equipment Management - The Associate Technical Director (ATD) will become responsible for achieving and maintaining satisfactory results by:

  • Designing, setting up, and maintaining safe operation of sound, lighting, stage and other technical equipment and systems
  • Monitoring the condition of equipment including lighting, sound, and rigging equipment; arranging for the repair and replacement within budgetary constraints; performs preventive maintenance on equipment
  • Maintaining current knowledge of all equipment and supervises training on all equipment
  • Recommending capital purchases of technical equipment to the Production Manager
  • Recruiting, training, managing, and retaining competent stage technicians and equipment operators
  • Developing, implementing, and monitoring policies to ensure a safe work environment in the back stage and stage areas
  • Serving as Building Supervisor after normal hours of operation, or during assigned productions and rental events
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical operation budgets; maintain inventory and order specialized supplies
  • Staying up to date of new technology and software relative to lighting and audio engineering.

2) Pre Performance of TIP Productions – in the production period the ATD shall become responsible for satisfactory results by:

  • Accurately determining the necessary technical supports, such as lighting, sound, staging, and special needs, necessary for events and performances in advance of production dates, by reading scripts of each TIP production
  • Contributing to production meetings as scheduled
  • Developing and maintaining positive relationships with designers, builders, and local suppliers
  • Advising Production Manager on complete and accurate technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for the individual show in a timely manner
  • Providing positive supervision and assists with set and stage construction and management as required
  • Ensuring construction of all scenic design elements within the designated time period, as determined by the overall production schedule, and to the satisfaction of the productions’ creative design team
  • Ensuring that invoices for payment and/or receipts for disbursement, with respect to authorized expenditures, are promptly submitted being proficient and efficient with all expenditures made within the budget

3) Performance Period – the ATD will become responsible for satisfactory results during performances by:

  • Ensuring safety protocols are maintained by FOH staff, running crew, Stage Management and cast members
  • Ensuring the continued smooth and safe operation of the equipment and technical
    aspects of performances
  • Organizing and implementing the strike and load out of all technical elements as required

4) Additional duties as assigned by the Production Manager

Qualifications / Required Skills

• Willingness to learn and develop all the necessary skills for eventual promotion to Technical Director, at TIP or elsewhere
• Certificate of completion of a technical theatre training programming, or equivalent experience
• Two years professional experience as an operator of lighting and/or sound consoles
• Two years professional experience as a stage technician (stage carpenter, grip, props crew, flyman, etc)
• Awareness and knowledge of Ontario Live Performance guidelines
• Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous tasks in a timely manner
• Ability to retain focus in stressful conditions
• Possessing a collaborative and collegial professional attitude
• Competent, working knowledge of theatrical equipment, design tools and software, including AutoCad, SketchUp, spreadsheets and word processing programs
• Ability to read and interpret drawings and plots, supplementing design work as needed

Previous experience as an Assistant Technical Director would be an asset.
Previous First Aid, WHIMIS, Health & Safety training

Located in the rural town of Gananoque, the Playhouse audience is predominantly senior citizens. The Playhouse continually looks for new and innovative ways to make both the artistic offerings and the physical venues more accessible to the community. This project will improve the physical accessibility of Playhouse venues and ensure the safety of all who come to visit.
