Day 1: 2D Scenic Drafting in Vectorworks 2014
November 1, 2014 9:20 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Recommended for all those new to Vectorworks 2014
 
Learn how to use: basic tool palette, classes, design layers, sheet layers, notation, viewports, dimensioning, layout, editing and plotting drawings to PDF. This session will start with a prop drawing to establish work flow and tool use, build on this by using an existing theatre plan and section to draw scenery, and finally organize different scenes and drawings for build. 
 

Day 2: 2D Light Plots in Vectorworks Spotlight 2014
November 2, 2014 9:20 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Co-taught by Steve Ross and James McKernan
Day 1 is recommended for all new users, as this session is based that knowledge
 
Learn how to create hang points, insert instruments from libraries, create light plots from a PDF of the space, Advanced lighting functions in spotlight and plot drawings to PDF. This session will start with the theatre plan and section from day  1, move through spotlight tools and drawing standards, creating a light plot and more advanced tricks for box booms, lighting trees and non standard positions.

Instructor Steve Ross will start the session by a brief discussion on customizing the workspace, command key assigning /changing and adjusting the lighting device manager to suite your needs. Learn how to create "smart" lighting positions, inserting instruments, and export/import to Lightwright. We will look his process of bringing in an existing set (or rental) into a theatre that he has worked in more than once by using base drawing (or template) of the permanent infrastructure and lighting equipment.   

Look at other functions in spotlight such as PDF set plans, position summary boxes, and the new instrument key tool. He will also discuss utilizing some helpful 3rd party tools that are  very useful from the beginning to end of the lighting design process. This session will start with the theatre plan and section from day 1, move through spotlight tools and functions and end with doing a practice plot.

About the instructors: 

James McKernan is an Associate Professor of Theatre Technology in the Department of Theatre, York University. He has been teaching the use of Vectorworks and other CAD software for over 10 years. Previous to this he was head carpenter and construction co-ordinator on shows such as the Junos, Genies, MMVAs and the Geminis while working for McWood Studios.

Stephen Ross  - Lighting Designer Steve first started lighting opera for Sarah Caldwell at the Opera Co. of Boston. Shortly after he assisted on a couple of operas at the Metropolitan Opera Co. in New York, where he met Lotfi Mansouri, the then General Director for the Canadian Opera Co. It was soon thereafter that Lotfi brought Steve to Canada to light for the C.O.C. He has since designed lighting for over 45 Canadian Opera Company productions including LuluThe Tales of Hoffmann, OtelloThe Emperor of Atlantis, Luisa MillerThe Bartered Bride, La Bohème. His work has been seen on stages throughout North America, at the opera companies of Seattle, Boston, San Diego, Baltimore, Houston, Dallas, Santa Fe, St. Louis, Palm Beach, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Chicago, New Orleans, Miami, Montreal, Calgary, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver and Orange County, California. Lighting designs for other productions include Canadian Stage Company’s The Threepenny OperaCabaretGuys and DollsToad of Toad HallHedda Gabler, and Harry Chapin, Lies and Legends. Steve created the lighting design for the Mirvish production of Damn Yankees at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, and also lit the revival production of Shenandoah in Toronto and on Broadway, as well as for Opera Pacific in California. He has also been teaching Lighting Design 1 at York University for the past 4 years.
